This is a tough one for you because I can supply very limited information. When I share my external USB hard drive with HFS all appears to be ok for a while then, maybe because some other software like virus scanner of media player accesses the USB drive, HFS stops responding and uses exactly 50% processor time. Only way to recover things is task manager end process. The problem don't end there though, windows xp is now unstable and other tasks will eat up 50% of resources one afer another, sort of domino effect, until the computer has to be re-booted. This behaviour happens every time I share the USB drive on the HFS server but never happens when HFS shares the same files from the internal IDE drives. Maybe it's just my computer that's a bit quirky maybe it's HFS I just can't tell you more. Maybe worth just knowing about the problem and see if it turns up for anyone else. Oh by the way the USB drive seems to work perfectly with all other software that accesses it I use the drive constantly without error.

I can't be sure it isn't hardware specific. I thought I would just mention the problem in case it rears it's head for others :-)

OK thanks for replies. Trust me to have a dodgy computer lol. If it's not a problem for anyone else I can work round it and no problem for me either. Thanks for the info

I have used HFS on a couple different USB thumb drives and I have never had a problem, but with out having access to your external hard drive there is no way to tell if that is the source of the problem. I suggest your try using your external hard drive and HFS on another computer and see if the same symptons appear, if they do it means it is on your hard drive, either a problem with the drive itself or the software on it. (Maybe a virus) I suggest your run a virus scan on both your computer and the external hard drive to remove that possibility.

Good luck, I hope you get it sorted out.

yeah .. I think it's a computer problem ... not a virus. The usb drive in question is 15 metres away from the computer via 2 usb extension leads with repeaters (essentially one port hubs) and a further 5 metre cable with a powered hub under the TV(It's a multimedia H/D). All works fine unless I reboot the computer with the usb devices plugged in. The problem only arises when this equipment is plugged in at windows startup. So I have a good work around for the problem and I'm glad it's just me with the problem. It would have been a bitch to fix if it was HFS because I never got to see an error message or log. Thanks again for the feedback .. knowing it works fine for others has helped me enormously to investigate my problem more carefully. ;D

ok, i read it all, but just 2 more notes :)
- i guess the 50% CPU is because you have a dual core, and it is taking 100% of one core
- when a problem persists after killing a process, it is likely to be a system wide problem, since windows try to clean most things when a task is ended
