I'm thinking to distribute HFS also inside an installer, aside the stand-alone exe.
These would have 2 pro's

1. the stand-alone would save options by default to file, making this possibility clearer for people who like "portable" applications

2. it would be easier for many users who are not familiar with executables

I personally prefer the executable file... Especially when HFS is always being updated, i am a bit old school and i prefer to download the entire new application than run an update on a program.

Also i like to save HFS options by default to file, i dont like the idea of saving to registry... MAYBE we could have a single save file (Save Settings) that you could save out the virtual file system, the options and whatever files HFS needs to save to a file, i have noticed the template also stores itself in the same folder as these.

BUT on the upside, it is true that an installer would be good for the people that are a little freaked out by executables... i like them myself, i even run utorrent from an executable  :D

MAYBE the version with the installer could include "approved" HFS templates within its installer... and maybe the user can build their file system, add in a template from the supplied selection or from a file... then once the install is complete they have a fully operational HFS, file system and everything nicely setup !!!

In general i dislike "setup" or "installs" if not absolutely necessary. And HFS in imho does not need that.
Especially for portable use this registry modifications are annoying.
My proposal: distribute a HFS.zip or .rar with the necessary default files: HFS.exe, HFS.ini ...
The hfs.ini should contain the most general settings; if a user wants all the whistle and bells, it can be added later anyway.
A user would download this archive, creates a directory unpacks and ready.
For real beginners add a readme1st.txt with this simple instructions.
For updates, just add the new hfs.exe. (BTW. i also do not like the auto-update, but this is just my personal view...)
just my 2 cents

if the program doesn't "install", the user may use the exe from the desktop, even move it somewhere else after using. that's why options are saved by default to registry.

and no... real beginners don't read readme files.
