I have a large number of files on HFS, and I've noticed searches can sometimes take 1-2 minutes to complete. I tried indexing the drive through Windows, but HFS must use a different search method. Is there any way to make use of an index or speed up searches somehow? Thanks.

how many files do you have in the virtual file system?
you can read it in the bottom bar, where it says VFS: 100 items

ok, so you are relying on real folders, good.
I don't have an optimization advice for your case, sorry.
What i would do is: understand what's the bottleneck. It may be the CPU or the drive.
This may give you some insight.
When you verify CPU usage, be careful to watch single cores and not the total. Because HFS uses only one core.
