Multiple users = Slow connection?

When a user download files from the file server, the entire system is becoming really slow (both navigation and downloading). Is there a solution to this problem or it's related to the computing power of the server itself?

computing power, you need maybe at least p 4 dual core cpu or maybe amd 32 bit system or 64 with maybe 2 GB ddr ram

something like that if you have a single core cpu and say your hfs server gets lots of users online it will ask to much resource from the single core and thus hfs can't operate faster when the hardware is not enough. 

you can try to cluster maybe 3 or 2 high end computers to act as a single core, here more info

i didnt try this yet, since i don't have another computer to test it with, the basic idea is simple

install the free version of XenServer to all the computers you want to use as servers and these computers will be clusterd together

then you only need to install the image file, iso like windows xp pro etc and run hfs through the whole cluster.

You do not have "some" P2P software that runs on your machine (emule, bittorrent, ...)?
If so, try your best to share bandwidth between your softwares.
And keep a little bit of bandwidth for your browser.

First of all thank you very much for all your replies.

The server is located in my LAN and users outside the LAN can't reach it (it has no interent connection).

I guess the solution is related to computing power since the specs of my machine is rather low. I will upgrade it and check if there is any improvement.

your network is fast (because it's LAN), and thus your server is required to load and send a lot of data.
if you were over the internet you would have no problem, because the network would have been much slower.
you should check what is the bottleneck: HD speed, or RAM or CPU. Then upgrade it. If you are not rich, don't upgrade randomly without knowing the bottleneck.
