well, i think the best thing is to introduce an option for it. future versions.
In the while, you can edit the template, [folder] section, and replace %item-url% with %item-url%?sort=t.
This won't apply to the root, but you can workaround this in several ways. The easiest way is to move all things to a subfolder. Another way, without moving anything but much more complex, is to introduce a redirecting html page that will be the default page, and it will redirect to /~nodefault?sort=t
