I haven't gotten any of my friends to come to this forum yet.  I've had them enter in the address manually every time so far.

For DynDNS setup:

Step 1. Set up your DynDNS.com account.

Register for a free account at DynDNS. Agree to the site's terms, and use a legitimate email address to complete registration. Once in awhile, DynDNS will email you at that address asking you to confirm that it continue your service.

Log into your new account. Go to the "My Services" area on the left side. Under "Host Level Services" click "Add Host Services." There, click "Add Dynamic DNS Host." DynDNS will autofill your IP address (if you're doing this from your home computer). Choose a domain and type in a custom subdomain, which can be anything from lifehacker.kicks-ass.org or john.is-a-geek.com or gtrapani.dyndns.org.

Step 2. Set up your HFS to update DynDNS.

Menu > Dynamic DNS updater > DynDNS wizard...

- Fill the fields with your DynDNS account settings
- Save the options of HFS.

Now that your HFS is "registered" with DynDNS, each time your computer's IP address changes, it has to let DynDNS know. This can be also done either with free updater client software or through your router.

Other solutions (In place of step 2)

Solution 2
If you are behind a router, you're in luck. Most modern routers support dynamic DNS services. Here's a screenshot from my router's interface (yours will look different) with DynDNS settings.

Solution 3
If your computer is connected directly to the Internet, download the DynDNS updater client for Windows: http://www.dyndns.com/support/clients/  Install it and enter your DynDNS information so that your computer can update DynDNS's database regularly.

Step 3. You're done. Give your new domain a spin!

Type your new domain name by entering it in your web browser's address bar. It should resolve to your home server.

I followed step one and step two.  My new domain name is jed.dnsdojo.com

However, I'm not sure if it worked!

welcome mowogo :)
i'm sorry for your problem, but as the "self test", lots of people here, and myself report, your HFS is working perfectly all over the internet.
i'm downloading your mp3 right now.
the problem seems to be related only to those around you. funny.

as maverick noted, that message you got doesn't seem to be the standard message, so i guess that if you find who's giving you that message, you will find the offender. :)

anyway, if you already tried to type the full form
http://97.80.169.177/
then my suggestion to work around your problem is to not use your numerical address, but a name (domain).
you can get one for free at no-ip.com and dyndns.com
you just have to register there.

I've also registered at https://www.dyndns.com/ .  What am I supposed to do from here?  I am a newbie at this whole thing and am confused?

I registered at no-ip.com and don't know what I am supposed to do from here.  What am I supposed to setup?  What my final outcome supposed to be?  A very new at this?

An solution:

In Windows

Click START. Go to RUN. Type in Command. Then OK. When command box appears type after existing text: ipconfig /flushdns (exactly as here). Click ENTER.

Now restart your PC, and reset your router if you have one.

Your dns cache has a corrupt entry for the site you are trying to reach. If you want to see the difference go ipconfig /displaydns before and after flushdns.

I typed in ipconfig /displaydns into "cmd".  What am I looking at?  What is this command parameter doing for me?

Also, should I type in ipconfig /flushdns at every PC I have problems with (trying to access my HFS File Server).  Will this doing anything wrong to every PC I flush?

Well, I think I may have some information for you.  In one of your first posts in this thread you mentioned you have been getting "Oops - Broken Link" error messages.  I have never heard of such an error message so I decided to google it.  Many, many people have been reporting the same problem as you.  This isn't a HFS problem at all just so you know that.

You are going to have to do some reading and hopefully you will find a solution.

http://www.google.com/search?q=Oops+-+Broken+Link&sourceid=opera&num=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

Good luck.

Thanks.  But, unfortunately I don't use any toolbars in my web browsers.  I label them as spyware/malware.  I don't happened to be entering the IP Address in any toolbar.

Well, i think the problem is in your HFS. Tell a friend to download and install HFS. Then you try to connect to his server from a system without HFS installed. If you are able to connect, then something in your HFS is wrong. So you can try to reinstall HFS by zero, resetting all preferences and file system. Eventually you may also consider to change your ISP  ;D

Changing the ISP is not an option.  I never had any problems out of the one I'm using now.  However, I will try the other suggestions you suggested.

When trying to connect to your HFS File Server, you must be running HFS.exe (HFS File Server) on the external machine that you are using to connect to your own HFS File Server.

I kept trying to Log In to my HFS File Server from a friends PC(s) and kept having errors like "page not found" and/or "Oops - Broken Link" and/or many other error messages.  Even though it would be nice to access the HFS File server without having to run HFS.exe on an external PC (but this is not possible).  HFS.exe (HFS File Server) must be running on both machines that you are using.

You seem to be doing something wrong: HFS is a web-server (limited in some sense, but working perfectly as a fileserver!). To connect to your server at home from any place, you can access it with a web-browser in the same way as any other website, without the need to have installed hfs.exe on the client side. I downloaded from your site from a machine that is not running hfs. It think you are simply not writing the address of your home on your firends pc.

As SilentPliz says, hfs is portable, provided you save options to a file, and provided, on the othe pc you place your hfs and data to the same driveletter! Having all on a usbdrive K: on your system, in another system you must ensure that the driveletter assignd is also K: . That's all.

I've typed this IP address into Multiple PC's:

97.80.169.177
97.80.169.177
97.80.169.177
97.80.169.177
97.80.169.177
97.80.169.177

And I still get the same error message.  My friends try to access my HFS File Server with my IP address and still get the same error.  I've read the IP address to them and double checked what they enter into their PC's Web Browsers (IE-7 and Firefox 3) and they get the same message.  It wasn't till late last night when one of my friends installed HFS onto his PC that he was able to access my HFS File Server.  Why was my friend able to access the File Server only after installing HFS onto his PC?

You can show us an example of a link that you have tried?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

HFS is portable!
Simply save the options in a file.

How do you bypass security like Windows Vista UAC on a PC which you don't have Administrator Rights on?

To resolve this issue and as a note to the administrators, I'll tell you what the missing solution was to this problem.  This solution should be listed in the FAQ of the "HFS File Server" website.

If I'm at a College and/or Library and/or Work and the PC has Deepfreeze installed on it and/or administrator rights denying the right to install and run HFS.exe (HFS File Server) on it, then I will be unable to access my HFS File Server.

It would be nice if a portable version of HFS that could be run from a USB flash drive allowing you to access your HFS File server from an external machine could be created.  That way you could download and upload files directly to and from your hard drive eliminating the need for Larger USB Flash Drives.  This Portable Standalone Version of HFS File Server would have to run without installing, and be able to bypass Windows Vista UAC, and not leave any traces of your uploading/downloading on the machine that you were working on.  I tried running HFS File Server on a friends PC that had UAC running with a password block out for any programs that would be installed on the machine without my friends permission.  Windows Vista wouldn't let me run HFS File Server.  My Loss!

Anyways, I hope this solution helps anyone else that comes across this problem.  I also hope to see someone create a portable version of HFS File Server that can run just as smoothly on a security enabled PC as "Portable VLC Media Player" and/or "OpenOffice" can.  Even though these alternate programs are unrelated to HFS File Server, both of these alternate programs run smoothly on security enabled PC's.

Thanks Again for Everyone's Help and Have A Great Day!

I used IP Address "97.80.169.177" on two different external PC's (One running Vista and the other Win XP) using Port 80.  How come I can not get to the HFS File Server?

Note:  I can get to them locally and download files.  However, I can not get to them externally.  What could I be doing wrong on the external PC's?  What things should I be doing differently?

I know you may be getting frustrated with me and I appreciate all the help you are giving me.  However, please bear with me until I can find a resolution to this problem.

When logging into a my IP Address from an external Windows machine, I can't even see the HFS File Server Page.  My HFS Log File isn't even showing a log on attempt.

Setting up HFS File Server is my first file server I have ever set up.  I am new to the whole subject.  I have followed the instructions from: http://rejetto.com/wiki/index.php/First_time_configuration .  However, I ran into this problem and went directly to the forums.  I have to go to work now (3rd shift).  I will try to log back in tomorrow morning.

Please understand that I appreciate all the help that I can get from all of you out there that choose to help me.  Thank you.

I just turned off my Firewall and tried to access HFS File Server from my friends computer through IE and still got the "Oops - Broken Link" message (So Frustrating).  I'm lost at this point.  What other ports can I use other than Port 80.  Maybe that is my only option left...

13
I just tried to access my HFS File Server from a friend that lives above me through IE.  The message I received was "Broken Link."  What can I do to resolve this?

14
I just donated to HFS File Server.

This is a picture of a speed test I did on my Internet Connection.  It was don't within 10 minutes of this post.
