HFS ~ HTTP File Server / Re: Download Speed
« on: April 23, 2008, 02:26:42 AM »
Those still suffering from speed problems on LAN with HFS should take a GOOD look at the CLIENT PC's default TCP Receive window thats being used to access the HFS server, THATS RIGHT YOUR CLIENT or try a different PC as the client to verify HFS is in fact working OK on the server.

I was stuck at 41k to server and 100k from server across LAN due to the CLIENT PC's TCP receive window being to small as it had been optimized for gaming/low latency (which is a small TCP window, for small amounts of data at low latency) to small for HFS to push lots of data through it.

I have run, and do run many server packages on my server machine and have never had this LAN speed problem before, it was like it was actively choked by some kind of speed limiter, however a healthy TCP receive window setting on the client pc (also my gaming machine) sorted my thruput problems with HFS and I am now happily updating HFS server at LAN speeds across the LAN.

I use TCP optimizer from  http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php for the manipulation of my connection on client pc as its easier and safer than stuffing with your windows registry manually....

HFS is a top class, easy to use and feature packed file server.......well done Rejetto !

If its working internally (on LAN) it should also be working on the internet provided the server running HFS has the required ports forwarded thru your router/firewall and you know how to gain access to the server with the correct IP address format, which is a confusing method for a newbie, because internal and external IP addresses for the same machine are different,  So i would suggest setting up a dynamic name to your server which will work internally and externally.

Try set up and install dyndns on your server pc to direct requests to HFS, it is a simple application that will strap your server machines IP address to an internet name such as somename.dyndns.ws     once this is set up and working u should be able to access your server externally and internally using the dynamic name set up by dyndns instead of using the ip address to point the request to your server.

I notice HFS has got set up options for dyndns however i have not configured them as dyndns was already in place and working on my server prior to HFS install. (i have tried a few servers and HFS is a top class package)

If your internet account has a dynamic IP address you will want dyndns or similar anyway so your server can be found by external users after its IP address changes, as a dynamic IP address can change at any time hence the use of the dyndns client keeps track of your constantly changing IP address and keeps it bound to the dynamic name you have given it.
In short HFS is prolly working fine both internally and externally already, its just not answering incorrectly formatted IP addressing. Give your server a dyndns name, access it via the name not the IP address....

Go here http://www.dyndns.com/    start a free account and set it up, download and install the dyndns client application to your server, it will ask you to sign in to your already created dyndns account then presto that machine now answers requests directed at the name you specified in dyndns account set up, obviously HFS will also need to be running as it will answer the request not dyndns, dyndns will only make sure the request lands at the target machine.
The dyndns update client (which runs on your server) was a touch hard to find on their site some time ago when i signed up but is required for it to work....

Hopefully this helps...Cheers

Must be you,

im able to get atleast 8 - 9 megabytes per second on my LAN here.

and im able to send the full 180 kilobytes i have available for upload to my friends.
Nope its not me, other server packages (xampp & serveU ftp to name only two) on same pc perform at typical LAN speeds across the LAN however HFS did not....
I have got mine sorted for good LAN performance now and am helping others ATM to hopefully get theirs sorted if they are suffering the same issues, as they got the same useless answers just like the couple above, thanks indeed fellas (with the exception of MarkV who had the only useful response), no one wants to hear bits and bytes, and it must be you cause mine works fine..... there is an issue, i think i have identified it, I will post again here if this proves to be fact.
So in future try not to be so quick with the useless answers fella's if you know nothing other than yours works don't post as you are only driving people away from what i believe to be a great piece of software.

BTW absolutely brilliant software now that i can use it on LAN at LAN speeds instead of on LAN at WAN speeds..........big hint there, lol, will be contributing via paypal as this software works fine (well done rejetto !) and it suits my needs, however its forum fails it badly, lucky i know a little something about something and sorted my thruput issues across LAN with HFS myself.

     Cheers....

HFS ~ HTTP File Server / is HFS for broadband or narrowband ?
« on: April 21, 2008, 01:11:40 PM »
do i need to buy this or something ? is it a shareware bandwidth limited version or something ? 41kb/sec is my max speed on 100mb LAN, i know there is already a thread regarding performance which has NIL real answers and is useless as no one wants to hear about bytes and bits and how they differ when there is an obvious and huge performance difference between the old software be it red kawa or any ftp/http server for that matter and the performance of HFS......   my question is this.... can HFS work to the potential (as proven by other servers) of a connections capacity or is it just for narrow band servers ?
HFS is very easy to use, seems to make connection no problem, goes straight out of the box but is just way to slow on thruput to be of any use..........

HFS ~ HTTP File Server / Re: Download Speed

my download speed from HFS also gets limited to 50 - 100 kbps.

HFS reports speed in BYTES (kB/s) not BITS (kb/s) like your response above shows.

You say you have an upload speed of 756 kb/s.  Therefore, 756 / 8 = 94.5 kB/s maximum speed with that connection.

There is no problem with HFS.  You just have a misunderstanding of bits & bytes.

no no misunderstanding HFS is great and easy to use but performs nothing like the old ftp server i was hoping to replace with HFS
