HTML & templates / Re: Some help with templates please
« on: December 05, 2006, 01:37:39 PM »
It's totally my fault that this error occurred in the wiki.
I think my mistake was assuming readers would first read the section on "HTML Editor and Templates"; but of course there's no reason that they should. I've attempted to fix this.
Each template in the gallery is accompanied by a link to the specific version that is illustrated. All these templates, including "Kule.org.uk HFS Template.tpl"
are hosted in the "Template Repository" (there's a general link to that as well). Where possible, credit to the originator is given.
Personally, I don't think it's that important that the documentation has mistakes. (Indeed, I think errors are inevitable.) What does matter is that the doc. is tested and mistakes quickly corrected.
I would stress however, that anybody can write in the wiki, and anybody can correct it.

HFS ~ HTTP File Server / Re: BUG: Unknown Network Error with .ISO files
« on: November 27, 2006, 03:00:50 AM »
A reasonably-quick, practical solution is to use WinRar to split up the big iso file into a number of smaller chunks. WinRar can do this automatically, and handle reconstruction at the user end.
This doesn't mean, of course, that I don't think any problems with transferring large files shouldn't be investigated.

Is it possible that we could have a "ThunderChicken_01" template, without a login system.
Then "ThunderChicken_02", with a login system.
Followed by "ThunderChicken_03" etc etc.
My point, as almost always, is the wiki.
http://rejetto.com/wiki/index.php?title=Template_Examples
The idea of course, is to explain (or at least show) the differences in various templates so that users can create their own.
I'll happily discuss this more if you want, and I'll also happily make the first draft of the doc. as soon as you say the 01 version is ready.
Alternatively, you have a perfect right to say that you don't want this in the wiki, although I think that would be a great pity.
I'd also welcome input from anybody about which templates are good to put in the wiki. ledufe is now hosting a vast collection (reachable from the above link) but I don't know which one to add next!

HFS ~ HTTP File Server / Re: Great software...
« on: November 19, 2006, 10:07:30 AM »
Thank you for this mail. The exploration of this kind of criticism can only make the documentation better, which is what we are striving to do. So I hope you will reply to my answers.
I would stress however, that HFS is both extremely easy-to-use and feature-rich. The doc. mirrors this by just providing a little information as introduction, and putting detailed info. about the features later.
Most users just dl the software, install, and start running and using it. It really is breathtakingly easy and we don't want the doc. to imply anything else. (Almost all initial problems are related to port-forwarding, which isn't really anything to do with HFS although we do try to help with this.)
You seem to be making 5 points:
1. What is it?
I quote from the first paragraphs of the doc.
"HFS (Http File Server) is file sharing software which allows you to send and receive files. You can limit this sharing to just a few friends, or be open to the whole world. HFS is different from classic file sharing because there is no network. HFS is a web server which uses web technology to be more compatible with today's Internet.
Since it is actually a web server, your friends can download files as if they were downloading from a website using a web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox. Your users don't have to install any new software."
What is difficult to understand about the above?
2.What's the flow of operation?
Surely this is answered in this section:
http://rejetto.com/wiki/index.php?title=First_time_configuration
3. User interface?
What interface would you expect for a file server? "What you call the "administration interface" is the user interface (at the host end). At the user end it's the browser, and we provide lots of pictures of that.
4. "Functionality, multiple file managing...? If this is browser based then there probably is none."
I don't quite understand this. It IS browser-based. You can use download managers. There are extensive file management facilities in the server user-interface.
5. "Make someone unrelated read the website, for a few minutes, and then ask them to describe the software and it's
features."
We have tried this and the results have been very satisfactory. Everyone understands it's "some kind of server that lets you upload and download files". I admit that some of the features are not understood purely by reading, but this is common in software. Most difficulties disappear once you start using it.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
We do rely on users reading both the wiki and the FAQ.
Do you think it would be better if we moved most of the information from the FAQ to the wiki?

HTML & templates / Re: Desperate for wiki (documentation) HELP
« on: October 26, 2006, 05:18:32 PM »
I've drafted, in excruciating detail and with massive hand-holding, a newbie first-timer's guide to using and changing a non-default template.
http://rejetto.com/wiki/index.php?title=Refinements#HTML_Editor_and_Templates
I hope you experts will read it and comment on it. Either here, or in the wiki "Article: Discussion".
What i would REALLY like is for somebody to add, between "Click to enlarge" and "Not everybody ......",
an abbreviated instruction list like this:
To change foreground color
Change this value in this line
To change graph color
Change this value in this line
To change graph size
Change this value in this line
etc. etc.
We could even build it up by cooperative effort. I guarantee to fix-up the English, so nobody should feel inhibited if they don't have mother-tongue English.
Ideally, this would include the template creator, but I don't know who that is (ledufre?).
I was thinking of using moondog's new template (if he'll let me) to demo "Advanced Features".

ledufe
I don't really agree. It's trivial (but very dramatic) to simply import a tpl file and replace the default. And then make tiny changes without breaking the template.
I totally agree that adding streaming files, layered templates etc, etc, are "Advanced topics"
I am now referencing your site as the best source of tpl files "for beginners". Is this ok with you ?
http://rejetto.com/wiki/index.php?title=Refinements#HTML_Editor_and_Templates
The link takes you here:
http://ledufe.no-ip.info:2222/HFS-templates/
My problem is that I think first-time users will be looking, at first, for simple tpl files, and will get horribly confused as they aren't easy to find on your site. Even default Black downloads as html.

I forgot that one of the most endearing characteristics of developers is their delight in pointing out single-character typo's.
You port-forwarding idea is, of course, wonderful. Nevertheless, for the sake of my sanity, think we should document it as it is now (ie 2.1) -- but likely future developments are worthknowing about to balance the time.

Sorry Maverick, i'm confusing my mavericks with my moondogs, must be getting near Halloween.
See also my mail tio him, above.
I totally accept your point about changing filenames.
My idea was to quickly make a set of known working tpl's and host them on ledufe's site. (Which is where i'm mostly dl from.) then i'll cut out the renaming bit.
But right now, I don't see any way of handling this for new users.
The HFS template editor only accepts tpl files. (and I can't find many --- but there are lots of htm files (templates)

Thanks again ... all this is useful for the wiki although I'm only dealing with first time users right now. (ANd assuming they have no knowledge of HTML). So I call this an "Advanced" topic.
But it will go in, somewhere.
I do have basic knowledge of html-
See
http://rejetto.com/wiki/index.php?title=Graphic_experiment
but you have to click edit to see the html, and i can't quite get the images to work at the size i want (so have removed most of them).
Will be offline for a while, now.

I'm not able to work on the wiki anymore till tonight, but you (and everbody else) are welcome to "tear to pieces" the initial draft of the start.
You can post here, or (better) use the Discussion page in the wiki.

My apologies. Of course i am only talking about the 2.1 built-in editor.
I should however, have written "restore default" not "revert to default".
Even more good news is that your suggestion of refreshing the browser DOES work (which goes in the wiki); you see how much i need help from you.
I am making progress albeit slow. You haven't quite got my point about the editor. I think i do understand the distinction between tpl and html. I did for example, rewrite the editor help (under rejetto's supervision) but my point is that the editor only offers to load tpl files. A first time user like me has no way of knowing you can also load an html file. I'm not sure how to handle this; my initial thought is to tell users to change the filenam from *.html to *.tpl
I also think its a good idea to make a sub directory called Templates, but i epect i'll later run into trouble with templates that require some files in root.
