HFS ~ HTTP File Server / Using CSS

I'm having problems using CSS w/ HFS...I have set the index.html as the default mask, but the CDD does not load, leaving me w/ an all text page...The code is fine, I'm sure of that, as I have tested it on another server.  Are there any special roots I need to direct my CSS files to?  Are seperate style sheets not suported in HFS? Thanks for the help.
