Title: I Cannot Connect To My HFS Server from another Computer...
Post by: mowogo1820 on May 26, 2009, 10:19:00 PM
To start with, I want to say thank you for those who designed HFS.  Wonderful Job!!!

My Computer:

MS Windows XP Professional SP2
AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+
2.0GB RAM,  NVIDIA Geforce 9500 GT OC Video Card
Internet Connect: 10 Mb Cable Connection
I am using a cable modem (not a router).

I have setup an HFS File Server on my PC.  My IP address is 97.80.169.177.  I have given my Firewall full rights to HFS (including Server Rights).  I have setup a File Folder on HFS called "Rejetto Test File (Not Password Protected)" with an MP3 called "Immortals - Mortal Kombat Theme.mp3" for test purposes.

The Problem:

When I enter my IP Address in IE and Firefox, I can access my HFS File Server (and I can download files from my HFS File Server from my own computer in which HFS is running from).  However, when I enter the same IP address into a friends computer on IE and/or Firefox, I cannot access my HFS File Server (Very Frustrating).  How can I access my HFS File Server from the outside world via another PC?  What steps must I take?

Thank you for taking the time to read this and have a nice day.

Also, I tried the Self Test Option.  The reply was" The test is Successful.  The Server should be working fine."

What does the sellftest say ?   menu -> self test.  http://rejetto.com/wiki/index.php/First_time_configuration (http://rejetto.com/wiki/index.php/First_time_configuration)

Perhaps your ISP does not allow to use port 80, then you should use another port.

My Internet Service Provider is: Charter Communications and my port is port 80.  What other ports can I use?

I just tried to access my HFS File Server from a friend that lives above me through IE.  The message I received was "Broken Link."  What can I do to resolve this?

I just turned off my Firewall and tried to access HFS File Server from my friends computer through IE and still got the "Oops - Broken Link" message (So Frustrating).  I'm lost at this point.  What other ports can I use other than Port 80.  Maybe that is my only option left...

As I wrote you before hours, you are online with port 80, i connect and download. Just type http://mm.nn.oo.pp on your friends pc.

You should see it on your logfile  :)

I used IP Address "97.80.169.177" on two different external PC's (One running Vista and the other Win XP) using Port 80.  How come I can not get to the HFS File Server?

Note:  I can get to them locally and download files.  However, I can not get to them externally.  What could I be doing wrong on the external PC's?  What things should I be doing differently?

I know you may be getting frustrated with me and I appreciate all the help you are giving me.  However, please bear with me until I can find a resolution to this problem.

When logging into a my IP Address from an external Windows machine, I can't even see the HFS File Server Page.  My HFS Log File isn't even showing a log on attempt.

Setting up HFS File Server is my first file server I have ever set up.  I am new to the whole subject.  I have followed the instructions from: http://rejetto.com/wiki/index.php/First_time_configuration .  However, I ran into this problem and went directly to the forums.  I have to go to work now (3rd shift).  I will try to log back in tomorrow morning.

Please understand that I appreciate all the help that I can get from all of you out there that choose to help me.  Thank you.

To resolve this issue and as a note to the administrators, I'll tell you what the missing solution was to this problem.  This solution should be listed in the FAQ of the "HFS File Server" website.

When trying to connect to your HFS File Server, you must be running HFS.exe (HFS File Server) on the external machine that you are using to connect to your own HFS File Server.

I kept trying to Log In to my HFS File Server from a friends PC(s) and kept having errors like "page not found" and/or "Oops - Broken Link" and/or many other error messages.  Even though it would be nice to access the HFS File server without having to run HFS.exe on an external PC (but this is not possible).  HFS.exe (HFS File Server) must be running on both machines that you are using.  If I'm at a College and/or Library and/or Work and the PC has Deepfreeze installed on it and/or administrator rights denying the right to install and run HFS.exe (HFS File Server) on it, then I will be unable to access my HFS File Server.

It would be nice if a portable version of HFS that could be run from a USB flash drive allowing you to access your HFS File server from an external machine could be created.  That way you could download and upload files directly to and from your hard drive eliminating the need for Larger USB Flash Drives.  This Portable Standalone Version of HFS File Server would have to run without installing, and be able to bypass Windows Vista UAC, and not leave any traces of your uploading/downloading on the machine that you were working on.  I tried running HFS File Server on a friends PC that had UAC running with a password block out for any programs that would be installed on the machine without my friends permission.  Windows Vista wouldn't let me run HFS File Server.  My Loss!

Anyways, I hope this solution helps anyone else that comes across this problem.  I also hope to see someone create a portable version of HFS File Server that can run just as smoothly on a security enabled PC as "Portable VLC Media Player" and/or "OpenOffice" can.  Even though these alternate programs are unrelated to HFS File Server, both of these alternate programs run smoothly on security enabled PC's.

Thanks Again for Everyone's Help and Have A Great Day!

FALSE !
A simple browser is sufficient to access the files on the PC that run HFS.exe

HFS is portable!
Simply save the options in a file.

How do you bypass security like Windows Vista UAC on a PC which you don't have Administrator Rights on?

When trying to connect to your HFS File Server, you must be running HFS.exe (HFS File Server) on the external machine that you are using to connect to your own HFS File Server.

Wrong.  HFS only needs to be running on the server.  Any PC connecting to your home HFS PC via the internet, connects to you via your external IP address with a browser.  The PC's connecting to your home server from the internet don't have to be running a copy of HFS to make this happen.

You seem to be doing something wrong: HFS is a web-server (limited in some sense, but working perfectly as a fileserver!). To connect to your server at home from any place, you can access it with a web-browser in the same way as any other website, without the need to have installed hfs.exe on the client side. I downloaded from your site from a machine that is not running hfs. It think you are simply not writing the address of your home on your firends pc.

As SilentPliz says, hfs is portable, provided you save options to a file, and provided, on the othe pc you place your hfs and data to the same driveletter! Having all on a usbdrive K: on your system, in another system you must ensure that the driveletter assignd is also K: . That's all.

You don't. That's the whole point of having security measures.  8)

Accessed the server and downloaded the MP3. 100% fine.

I really don't know.Anyways, is NOT a solution. I can suggest you to try with Firefox 3.0.10. Simply type http://<youripadress>  in the address bar. Make sure your HFS at home is running on port 80. It must work.

I've typed this IP address into Multiple PC's:

97.80.169.177
97.80.169.177
97.80.169.177
97.80.169.177
97.80.169.177
97.80.169.177

And I still get the same error message.  My friends try to access my HFS File Server with my IP address and still get the same error.  I've read the IP address to them and double checked what they enter into their PC's Web Browsers (IE-7 and Firefox 3) and they get the same message.  It wasn't till late last night when one of my friends installed HFS onto his PC that he was able to access my HFS File Server.  Why was my friend able to access the File Server only after installing HFS onto his PC?

Perhaps an error on his part the first time he tried. The fact that this has worked with hfs installed on his PC, seems to be a coincidence.

Well, i think the problem is in your HFS. Tell a friend to download and install HFS. Then you try to connect to his server from a system without HFS installed. If you are able to connect, then something in your HFS is wrong. So you can try to reinstall HFS by zero, resetting all preferences and file system. Eventually you may also consider to change your ISP  ;D

Well, I think I may have some information for you.  In one of your first posts in this thread you mentioned you have been getting "Oops - Broken Link" error messages.  I have never heard of such an error message so I decided to google it.  Many, many people have been reporting the same problem as you.  This isn't a HFS problem at all just so you know that.

You are going to have to do some reading and hopefully you will find a solution.

An solution:

In Windows

Click START. Go to RUN. Type in Command. Then OK. When command box appears type after existing text: ipconfig /flushdns (exactly as here). Click ENTER.

Now restart your PC, and reset your router if you have one.

Your dns cache has a corrupt entry for the site you are trying to reach. If you want to see the difference go ipconfig /displaydns before and after flushdns.

i'm sorry for your problem, but as the "self test", lots of people here, and myself report, your HFS is working perfectly all over the internet.
i'm downloading your mp3 right now.
the problem seems to be related only to those around you. funny.

as maverick noted, that message you got doesn't seem to be the standard message, so i guess that if you find who's giving you that message, you will find the offender. :)

anyway, if you already tried to type the full form
http://97.80.169.177/
then my suggestion to work around your problem is to not use your numerical address, but a name (domain).
you can get one for free at no-ip.com and dyndns.com
you just have to register there.

When you enter the command ipconfig /flushdns (only on your PC server) and restart your PC, you can test if your problem is solved.

There is no danger to your PC.

For DynDNS setup:

Step 1. Set up your DynDNS.com account.

Register for a free account at DynDNS. Agree to the site's terms, and use a legitimate email address to complete registration. Once in awhile, DynDNS will email you at that address asking you to confirm that it continue your service.

Log into your new account. Go to the "My Services" area on the left side. Under "Host Level Services" click "Add Host Services." There, click "Add Dynamic DNS Host." DynDNS will autofill your IP address (if you're doing this from your home computer). Choose a domain and type in a custom subdomain, which can be anything from lifehacker.kicks-ass.org or john.is-a-geek.com or gtrapani.dyndns.org.

Step 2. Set up your HFS to update DynDNS.

Menu > Dynamic DNS updater > DynDNS wizard...

- Fill the fields with your DynDNS account settings
- Save the options of HFS.

Now that your HFS is "registered" with DynDNS, each time your computer's IP address changes, it has to let DynDNS know. This can be also done either with free updater client software or through your router.

Other solutions (In place of step 2)

Solution 2
If you are behind a router, you're in luck. Most modern routers support dynamic DNS services. Here's a screenshot from my router's interface (yours will look different) with DynDNS settings.

Solution 3
If your computer is connected directly to the Internet, download the DynDNS updater client for Windows: http://www.dyndns.com/support/clients/  Install it and enter your DynDNS information so that your computer can update DynDNS's database regularly.

Step 3. You're done. Give your new domain a spin!

Type your new domain name by entering it in your web browser's address bar. It should resolve to your home server.

as i said, you are about to not use your numerical address, but a name (domain).
a domain is a way to type an address without using ugly numbers.
if you go to 64.233.187.99 or you go to google.com, it's the same!
but google.com is much easier.
no-ip and dyndns provide free domains for you.
only drawback is that you must keep up to date this "link" between numbers and domain, but this is only about you, your visitors needs nothing else but their browser.
HFS integrates an automatic updater.

I haven't gotten any of my friends to come to this forum yet.  I've had them enter in the address manually every time so far.
It might be interesting to ask one of them to try that if possible.
I can't imagine why if clicking the link here works for me, it wouldn't work for anyone, unless
you are all inside the same network/intranet. By your IP address, it doesn't look that way?
If it worked, just save to favorites, maybe.

Alt idea.
Copy one of the links above of your address and email it to one of them to try?

Add me to the list of "It works for me!"

I used window Vista and Mozilla Firefox and tried http://jed.dnsdojo.com/ (http://jed.dnsdojo.com/) and went to:
http://jed.dnsdojo.com/Rejetto%20Test%20File%20(Not%20Password%20Protected)/ (http://jed.dnsdojo.com/Rejetto%20Test%20File%20(Not%20Password%20Protected)/)
and clicked:
http://jed.dnsdojo.com/Rejetto%20Test%20File%20(Not%20Password%20Protected)/Primitive%20Radio%20Gods%20-%20Standing%20Outside%20A%20Broken%20Phone%20Booth%20With%20Money%20In%20My%20Hand.mp3 (http://jed.dnsdojo.com/Rejetto%20Test%20File%20(Not%20Password%20Protected)/Primitive%20Radio%20Gods%20-%20Standing%20Outside%20A%20Broken%20Phone%20Booth%20With%20Money%20In%20My%20Hand.mp3)

I also went to:
http://97.80.169.177/ (http://97.80.169.177/)
and it still works so your IP address hasn't changed yet.
from here I downloaded:
http://97.80.169.177/Rejetto%20Test%20File%20(Not%20Password%20Protected)/Lords%20of%20Acid%20-%20Pussy.mp3 (http://97.80.169.177/Rejetto%20Test%20File%20(Not%20Password%20Protected)/Lords%20of%20Acid%20-%20Pussy.mp3)
and:
http://97.80.169.177/Rejetto%20Test%20File%20(Not%20Password%20Protected)/Immortals%20-%20Mortal%20Kombat%20Theme.mp3 (http://97.80.169.177/Rejetto%20Test%20File%20(Not%20Password%20Protected)/Immortals%20-%20Mortal%20Kombat%20Theme.mp3)

Then I opened Internet Explorer 8 and pasted into the address bar:
http://jed.dnsdojo.com/Rejetto%20Test%20File%20(Not%20Password%20Protected)/Propellerheads%20-%20History%20Repeating.mp3 (http://jed.dnsdojo.com/Rejetto%20Test%20File%20(Not%20Password%20Protected)/Propellerheads%20-%20History%20Repeating.mp3)
and it download the file properly also.  It also displays the page properly without "Compatibility Updates" enabled.

Welcome taha,

You must open the port you use with hfs on your router. Look at http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm (http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm), locate your router there and follow the instructions.

After this, selftest and hfs should work, except if your firewall does not allow it. If you have problems in your firewall-settings, turn it off to do the selftest.

I am have some of the same problems. I am using DynDNS.com Host Services along with HFS. When I go to it from HFS into my browser I can only see the files on the computer I am using which I really don't need they are in my computer I am using. I tried one of the different computers and the same problem They can only see the files in that computer. Any help would be appreciated

I'm sure you have quite different problem, otherwise you would have found in some of the answers and comments in this thread a solution for your problem  ;)

What does the self-test of hfs say ? (menu -> selftest)

You can also take a look to http://www.rejetto.com/wiki/index.php/First_time_configuration (http://www.rejetto.com/wiki/index.php/First_time_configuration)

test says everything is working fine. I was told to put in my dyndns.org in the address bar. Whatever I put in the same files come up.  It doesn't matter what IP address I put in I can't figure it out

OK I read all the threads I flushed my IPs and stuff my test came out ok but once again no mater what I type in the address box the files from my own computer come up not the other computers. I do assume that I can load HFS on more than 1 computer as long as I have registered them on dyndns. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
   Thanks for your time

Carmello2003:

Hfs is a web-(file)-server. you only need to install it only on one computer. This computer, if inside a lan, has an address of: localhost:port = 127.0.0.1:port  (locally) and 192.168.xx.yy:port or  yourcomputernetworkname:port (inside your lan) and the external ip (for example 69.204.mm.nn:port) to access your server from internet.

':port' must be the port you specify in hfs, except if you use the standard web-port 80, then you need not to specify anything.

Your extenal ip is this one that is used tu update the address related to your domainname of your dyndns account (for example carmello.dyndns.org)

As the selftest of your server works, the only problem is that you don't type the right address when trying to access your server.  Use (adding the port if it's not 80):
 - localhost or 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.xx.yy or yourcomputernetworkname on the pc where the server runs.
 - 192.168.xx.yy or yourcomputernetworkname on the other pc's of your lan
 - 69.204.mm.nn or carmello.dyndns.org(what your domainname is!) to access it from the internet.
