I found this software just Googling for a personal file server for home use. I don't care so much about connecting from external right now though that may come in the future, just using at home among multiple pcs. I did see an article though written in Jan 08 saying that HFS can't download an entire folder or multiple files at once but that would come in future versions. Has this happened yet? I don't see it specifically mentioned in recent versions since then.
My primary use will be backing up/sharing pics and music between 4-5 pcs, is this the right program for me or should I be looking elsewhere? Would I be moving thousands of files one at a time?

Latest 2.3 betas can deliver a whole folder as archive 'folder.tar'. AFAIK the 2.2d can not.

2.2 published in 2007 has this feature.
If this is the right solution for you it's hard to say.
I guess you should first try by using classic windows file sharing feature. Several people decide to give up with it and use HFS, but it's a case-by-case story.

So are you saying 2.2 allows multiple file/whole folder movements or downloading as an archive as MarkV said?
Maybe for a little more clarification, my wife would be using this too, possibly kids as well, so ease of use is important as well. A typical use by them may be uploading 100+ pics from a camera to be shared by everyone. If this went easily there possibly would be some interest in ul/dl from outside the home. But that is not priority at this point.

It's a link. You click and download a single archive with all files in it.
The archive format is tar. It's not zip, but any archiver software supports it, also freeware ones.

My favorite being 7-zip (http://www.7-zip.org/)
