Title: Suggestion:To save about 50% bandwidth
Post by: yhm_7 on January 10, 2008, 07:16:32 AM
I notice that hfs has a option "compressed browsing",it can compress index pages, and save bandwidth.
but hfs can't compress files. Maybe hfs can add a function just like gzip or modd-z of ftp.
It will save about 50% bandwidth when file is txt/doc.

Of course this is a good idea but it it has holes, hfs doesn't have ftp yet, and compression can increase cpu usage on the host side, so it would have to be a selectable option if it is included. Some people run hfs on very old machines.

Im not 100% sure, but the compress browsing is gzip compression

for single text files (som 1..100 kBytes) normally the serverload is not very significant, but downloading whole folders it would be interesting to have a compressor option instead of full-size tar.

I think "full-size tar" is also can be compressed by gzip when it's being transferred.  "Transfer with gizp" and "downloading whole folders in tar" is two  individual functions.

most content people share (pdf, zip, rar, jpeg, avi, gif, mp3) is already compressed.
i will have a look at this, but with no hurry. :)
