Title: ToG in Different Flavours?
Post by: TSG on August 28, 2007, 08:12:40 AM
I propose 3 different flavours of the ToG.

I've decided i will not release another stable build until ToG 3.0.0. I will provide fixes for any bugs you find... although there hasn't been many with the last build which is what has helped me make this decision to postpone the release.

ToG - Standard -
EVERYTHING we can pour into the template.
(Will still be fully functional on servers with reasonable bandwidth 128kilobites\sec and Above)

JavaScript with <noscript> so functionality remains for JS turned off.
Tooltips and Previews that fade in/out.
Gradient Images for the interface.
Statistics that update every n seconds.
Modules that can Hide/Show, with row number detection.

This will be a swiss army knife in the HFS template arena, i hope :D

ToG - Basic -
The core of the ToG remains.
(Aimed at users with bandwidth below 128kilobites\sec or with counted uploads *problem here in Australia*)

JavaScript with <noscript> so functionality remains for JS turned off.
Basic preview boxes and tooltips.
No Images (except the logo of course).
Modules are static.
No updating statistics.

Perfect template for the host that is worried about bandwidth usage but still wants the core power of the ToG.

ToG - Lite -
No JavaScript AT ALL.
(Aimed at users with VERY low internet speeds, or a fear of JavaScript)

The ToG template will go back to its roots and provide users with the very basics in HFS functionality.

ToG Basic and Lite, will have the ability to use the gradient image set, it will be just be a simple matter of swapping the .css file from ToG Standard. :)

Me too :D

This idea has come about because the ToG is getting more and more advanced, and i don't want to leave my old audience behind, i started building this template when i only had 128kbps upload.

Naming scheme will go how i see fit.

This is a reply to the below (http://www.rejetto.com/forum/index.php?topic=4869.msg1027840#msg1027840) Flynsarmy post.

No. Your naming scheme has no reasoning at all because you don't know whats going into those versions. It is a bias naming scheme that outlines standard features as bloat when really the bloat is just features you don't want in the template. The post i made was a general guide, but the content of those versions is for me to decide. < Rhymes

Got any other complaints?

Also. I'd like to clarify that the Terayon, since i have been working on it, is a lot less bloated.

On the subject of ToG naming scheme wouldn't it make more sense to call them ToG Heavy, ToG regular and ToG Light? Regular includes a full feature set. Heavy includes the extra 'eye candy/bloat'. Light includes a subset of features. It makes more sense than the naming scheme you're currently going with.

Do you have any compelling reasons to name them how you've named them other than trying desperately to not put a name that sounds negative on the heavy version? My naming scheme at least has some reasoning behind it...

I guess no software version would ever be called "heavy".
You should follow a marketing course. :)
