Title: Portable VFS
Post by: Michel on July 20, 2007, 11:05:43 AM
Hello,

I could configure HFS to be portable (save settings in file). Is it also possible to define a VFS to be portable - I mean with relative paths?

Thanks.

yes... HFS auto-detect usage on a removable drive.
if HFS runs on a removable drive, and the VFS point to the same drive, the path are relative.
automagically :)

i just registered to say..
what a great piece of software
..and a forum that listens!!

just been using it for a week, but very intuitive interface!!

just searched the forum for "relative path" and i got the solution to run on USB drive!
alas, i should've done that earlier while i tried so much to figure it out!!

So HFS auto-detects if it's running on a removable drive? Well, I haven't tested it already, BUT:

I have a portable USB harddisk (running in an external case). Such disks unfortunately are registered as local disks in Windows. For this reason, I strongly believe autocheck will fail in that case. So there still should be an option to force portable mode.

this feature is supposed to be active when you run hfs on the removable drive, and you are publishing real folders of the same drive.
and moreover, it is useful if you make use of HFS on this drives on different computers where you get different drive letters.

are you in a case where both "active" and "useful" keywords apply?

For me directly? No. I was merely pointing out that USB harddisks are treated as local disks by Windows, yet will get different driveletters depending on the PC they are connected to. So anyone trying to run HFS on an USB harddisk will get a bad surprise. We must think of every possible case, and this case is very well possible!

before i spend time on such problem, i will wait to see someone who has it.
this automatic feature was officially released 11 months ago.
