I installed and played around with HFS for a while and then I changed the port to 81 (because I will need to allow traffic in from the internet to my hfs server and port 80 is already in use). Imagine my surprise when the upload/download speed dropped from around 10 000 KB/s to 40,9 KB/s. I have tried everything (I think) but if I use any other port than 80 speed drops to 40,9. My server is on a LAN and there are no firewalls active. I use IE6 and windows XP sp2 on both the client and the "server" which is a laptop becuase it's a test installation.
Any ideas?

maybe you are someway no more just going through the LAN, but via the internet.
this would justify the speed.

I thought about that but how can traffic on one port travel one way and traffic on all other ports travel another? The two computers (client and server) are even connected to the same switch and I change only the port and speed drops.

you may try with another web server and see if the problem is only for HFS

I will do that. And to clarify I would like to add that it's just uploading that has the problem. Downloading is not affected.

It's another pc on the LAN. I've also tested with a different server (running Windows server 2003) and it behaves in the same way and I've tested with three different clients (2000, 2003, XP) with the same result. The only thing I can't rule out (apart from the HFS application) is the cisco switches in the backbone and the default router on the network.

Newsflash!! I just discovered that it works fine with Mozilla firefox! The problem is in Internet Explorer. Does that ring any bells somewhere?

just read it and was going to suggest maybe QOS is on in the router/switch.
but Internet Explorer = Microsoft ;D

I know this is an old topic, but its really the only topic in the forum that touches on the problem. In my case it was all ports including 80....upload speeds with IE would not go above 40.9 KB/s even on the same LAN segement as the HFS server. After a bit of research I found a Microsoft KB article....

If you make the registry change outlined in the article, (using 64KB setting), it will solve the issue with slow uploads using IE.

I also know this topic is old, but i fail to understand why noone of the staff had a proper suggestion posted here about the slow download instead of upload.
Even Mozilla's firefox and IE 8 would not budge. I'm not going into the hacking of the registry, because not everyone can do this properly. I want to download a file (43MB) from my server at home, and looking at a 7 kb/sec. When i go remote (MSTSC) and copy it to a tunneled drive (it's one of the options in MSTSC) then i can get the file within thirty minutes. Now i must wait for almost two hours. So do not try to convince me to step to another medium, or tigh the loose screw on some hardware i have, this is in HFS!
Let me see if there is an option in HFS that can finetune the use of bandwitdh in DL and UL.
