So I've forwarded my ports and HFS passes the self test, but I still can't access it outside my LAN. I am trying to run it on port 81 if that makes a difference.

the self test is actually someone (something) accessing your HFS from the internet. so it is not a router problem. are you sure you are using the right IP address?

I go to the menu and click on find external IP address. It finds my external IP, Then I click on browse and it opens firefox and it gives me the standard unable to connect message. It works just fine if I specify the address within my LAN so I am just going up a wall here trying to figure out why it works on my lan, passes the self-test, but doesn't want to work when I try it within my browser

never mind... I think I figured it out. My friend was able to access my file server and download several files so it seems to be working even though if I try to use my external ip it will still give me an unable to connect.... strange, but as long as it works I am not going to complain.
