Title: Please Help Me
Post by: Pandora on December 12, 2003, 07:24:25 AM
I am having a problem which i don't know how to solve.

Let me start off by saying I have just downloaded and started running HFS version 1.5g.I am running on windows2000 pro with service pack 4. I started the program and put files on the server and asked a friend to download from me. He got the error Page Not Found but when i open it locally on my pc it opens up.

I have read through your FAQ's and Forum. I am on LAN with a cable connection and i have also disabled my firewall and i do not have a router so it cant be any of those things.

Please help me solve this problem cause i really find this software as being potentially very useful to me. Thanking you for any help forthcoming.

people cannot open a connection to a server on another network (lan)
this unless there is a router properly configured

you can find more details about this router thing on the FAQs
please, read the FAQs

that is the problem :)

no router -> no intercommunication

there has to be a machine connected to both networks that knows when to swap datas. it decides by addresses.

let it be known that if you are using an "internet sharing" utility like the one included in windows xp,
then that is a router (software)

if you are using internet from your LAN, then likely you are using a proxy or a router.
usually you know if you are using a proxy, because it is not transparent to the user. it usually requires more by-hand configuration.
if it works magically, then you may be using a router without knowing it, because it requires minimal (or none at all) manual configuration.

My internet connection goes thru a proxy as i am on Windows 2000 pro

But hfs uses my Real ip not the masked one which the world sees so what has that got to do with it as the pc is connecting to the internet properly. I can get on the site why can no one else get on it is my question

HFS does not work behind a proxy, sorry.
you may try using a "socksfying" software.

FYI, as far as i know, only SOCKS5 proxies allow you to bind a listening connection. That is, to have a server accepting external connection requests.
