Title: Updates sub menu...
Post by: TSG on September 05, 2007, 09:52:06 AM
I have an interface design question... shouldn't the 'Updates' sub menu be placed further down the list near, Help, Weblinks, About... below the divider... i feel it would make more sense there. I think it would be better just below 'Weblinks' personally, but what does the HFS community think?

rejetto says it is there because it contains options.

Maybe 'Updates' should be changed to 'Update options', and a link either below or inside 'Weblinks', that checks for program updates, like in other programs... *referring to Firefox*or maybe the whole sub menu should be moved like my previous suggestion.

I feel it is only apparent the way it is because HFS utilises a single menu.

GO.

I know i'm more or less and noobus but the menu is okay to work with but some sorting options to make it 9 core menus instead of 15, might be aestetically a plus.  When I'm not running to work I'll try to group them logically to me, Its fine as it is but it seems like its just a bunch of "bloat". Simple example would be to group like IP Address, accept connections on, and dynamic dns withina  core group called "Connection-specific".  Give some thought on the wording but what do others think?

grouping to a deeper level will make options harder to reach

I agree the single menu is in need of a big change in the future, people are used to many main menus, e.g. File, Tools, etc etc.

But what you are saying ELEVENNNN i actually asked rejetto a few days ago. HFS 3 is planned to have a change from the single menu... if you could provide a list of how you think the groupings should go then that would be good, we should all do one, and then work on a final outcome for HFS 3. Of course the final decision is up to rejetto though  :D

Also, i think HFS 3 is going to have an options panel with multiple options... so alot of those options in the current menu will disappear.

Home from work.
Here is what comes to mind

Core groups:

Download Options -- Limits, Max Connections, etc
Upload Options -- Limits, <What is already there>
Program Options -- Start/Tray/Launch Options (Inluding Flash Taskbutton)
Connection-specific -- IP Address, Accep Connections on, DDNS
Virtual File System -- <More or less how it is now>
Miscellanious (sp) Options -- <What serves as other options now>

About could be put next to the Port section that is not within the menu, as well as some other core often-used options.

**One thing I'd really like to see** Have Save File system and Save options into a button next to Port, and (potentially About) but thats because I use it alot, what do others think?  THERE IS ALOT OF ROOM NEXT TO "YOU ARE IN EXPERT/EASY MODE", Might be a good idea to use it. I'd also really like to see a Quicksave (saves filesystem and options as they are to a qs1 qs2.vfs that can be renamed later to be made the primary) Is uninstall really needed, most people would just control a and hit delete.

Help
Updates
Web Links

Other route, would be a File, Edit, View, etc layout, what do other people think?

I agree that the menu system could use a bit of work but I think that it is good enough currently not to need a major overhaul but I also think that what ElEVENNNN has thought of is really good and worth looking into.

Elevennnn's sugggestion for menu groups I think is worth looking into for HFS3 but their other suggestion for a save file system/options butons next to the port is a great idea and should be considered for the next beta.

Im not too sure about a quicksave option but that got me thinking of a auto-recover feature where HFS saves the options/vfs every 10-15 mins and if hfs isnt shutdown correctly on the next time it is started it loads what the auto-recover created.

Other ideas?

I didnt take into account the difference for easy mode and advanced mode, perhaps have only one mode and then a View, Show the following: or if not then the core list I gave was for advanced mode.

Also a little offtopic rejetto, when Im not doing specific tasks I usually go to easy mode but I want to keep the graph on, so I hit easy mode and then go to Show graph, next time I go to advanced and switch back to easy mode it doesnt remember the setting for the graph to show in easy mode, can this be fixed easily?  If not I dont mind. Its alright... I dont MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIND.

Thanks.
