yeah .. I think it's a computer problem ... not a virus. The usb drive in question is 15 metres away from the computer via 2 usb extension leads with repeaters (essentially one port hubs) and a further 5 metre cable with a powered hub under the TV(It's a multimedia H/D). All works fine unless I reboot the computer with the usb devices plugged in. The problem only arises when this equipment is plugged in at windows startup. So I have a good work around for the problem and I'm glad it's just me with the problem. It would have been a bitch to fix if it was HFS because I never got to see an error message or log. Thanks again for the feedback .. knowing it works fine for others has helped me enormously to investigate my problem more carefully. ;D

channel #HFS on undernet has received sufficient support to be registered with cservice.

OK thanks for replies. Trust me to have a dodgy computer lol. If it's not a problem for anyone else I can work round it and no problem for me either. Thanks for the info

I can't be sure it isn't hardware specific. I thought I would just mention the problem in case it rears it's head for others :-)

Bug reports / HFS crashes computer when serving files from a usb hard drive
« on: February 16, 2008, 07:06:23 AM »
This is a tough one for you because I can supply very limited information. When I share my external USB hard drive with HFS all appears to be ok for a while then, maybe because some other software like virus scanner of media player accesses the USB drive, HFS stops responding and uses exactly 50% processor time. Only way to recover things is task manager end process. The problem don't end there though, windows xp is now unstable and other tasks will eat up 50% of resources one afer another, sort of domino effect, until the computer has to be re-booted. This behaviour happens every time I share the USB drive on the HFS server but never happens when HFS shares the same files from the internal IDE drives. Maybe it's just my computer that's a bit quirky maybe it's HFS I just can't tell you more. Maybe worth just knowing about the problem and see if it turns up for anyone else. Oh by the way the USB drive seems to work perfectly with all other software that accesses it I use the drive constantly without error.

OK thanks for the quick reply. It does seem strange that the log shows the username during the file request from localhost ... but no username from the computer on the LAN. the same username and password is in use on both computers. I will play with it some more and if I come across a solution I will let you know.

I seem to have similar problems. the preview starts and about 145k of data is transferred (presumably the last part of the divx file) then the divx player on the receiving computer returns the error "The video cannot be reached(401 error) it appears the server is denying access to the file". Strangely though the stream works flawlessly on http://localhost.
here is the HFS log of the event from a computer on the LAN:-

HFS ~ HTTP File Server / Re: Viewing the HFS website
« on: September 29, 2007, 07:37:27 AM »
I also cannot jump to the site using the menu / web links option in the last two updates of the HFS server software ...I think there may be a bug here ?

OK I will just have to hope no other idiot tries to make a 100 gig tar archive. Thanks for you time :-)

11
Thats the point. The root is set to not archive but the subfolders each containing around 100 Gbytes each HAVE to be to use the archive function because HFS shows no + next to the folder icon to open it and set archive options in the smaller subfolders . Real folders cannot be opened to show subfolders. Only virtual folders can be opened to set archive options lower down the branches. Sorry I didn't make my problem clear in the last post

12
I am sharing several tens of thousands of files and find the virtual folders option takes about 15 minutes to load and generally crashes the computer within a day. So I have to use the real folders option. However I find that I have to allow the archive/download option on folders containing about 100Gbytes each. This proved a real pain when someone tried to archive and download a full 100 Gbyte folder  :o Is there, or will there in the future, be some way to select just the subfolders for the archive/download option when using the real folder option ?
