Bug reports / Re: HFS File Server - Some users can't connect

How about not using a 'direct' IP address, but a host name, in your case:

Code: [Select]
http://213-65-86-250-no2320.tbcn.telia.com:8080/yp3.3.1_a.zip
You can convert your IP doing a 'Reverse IP Lookup' (to find out the Host Name of a given IP Address), visiting THIS website. You will need to do this, in case your IP address changes (unless is static).

Perhaps some 'security suite' of some of your uses, block direct access to IP addresses (so, that's why they can't download the file). The chances of this solving your problem is of only 10%, but it's worth giving a try (report back if this solved this issue or not).

Cheers,
Leo.-

Thank you very much for the tip! I'm trying it out to see if people still submit any error reports :)

The one useful limit is Max simultaneous downloads from single address.

If user gets page but download doesn't play, then that is a MIME type error.

It seems it doesn't even get to the page at all, like it's not able to connect.

Wait, did the users cannot access the page, or they actually can access the filepage but cannot successfully download the modpack file?

Have a look in HFS Menu -> Limits, disable all the limits, as well as Prevent Leeching and Stop Spiders, then have a try?

P.S. One day ago I successfully downloaded your modpack within 4 hours without failure. I had a try with Minecraft but found my computer cannot afford that :D.

I have asked for a screenshot of what happens when they try to access the file through their browser, waiting for a response.

These are my settings. Since I don't want the downloads to completely fill up my entire network, I've set a hard limit at 3000kbit/s. At the moment, only 2 people are downloading- which splits it to 1500kbit per person. At most, 15-20 people are downloading at the same time. But that's very rare, and this issue seems to occur even when there is very low traffic.

Update 2020-09-28: I've received more messages from users who can't download through the link. Again, all of these users are using Windows 10 PCs. One could download it fine from their laptop but not from their stationary PC- on the same network.

I think there might be something wrong with HFS here.

New information! I have received a message from a user who can not download the file on their PC.

The user said this;

Quote
Hi Henriko!  I am experiencing the new bug where I cannot update the pack on the technic launcher.  It claims it is unable to download a certain file.  My computer is running Windows 10, I live on the east coast USA, I have no VPN, and my internet is from charter spectrum.  Interestingly, the computer in question belongs to my sister (we play with our cousin on a private server) and my own computer, which is also running Windows 10, seems to be downloading the update without issue, while hers (on the same internet connection) cannot.   I hope this is helpful!

So, from this message we can deduce a few things:

1. A VPN probably won't make the issue occur (but it might resolve the issue)
2. It differs from PC to PC, and is NOT network related it seems.
3. The OS doesn't seem to matter.
4. It could be an anti-virus issue, which is blocking access to HFS File Server files.

So all in all, this seems to be an issue only affecting some PCs which meet specific criteria. What these criteria are exactly isn't yet known, but I'm continuing investigating.

I'm in China and tested your server, seems OK.

I used a vpn to US and had a test, also OK.

Any other cases that fails the connection? We may find it out finally :D
You can use a locational tester, such as: https://www.webpagetest.org/

This is the issue with it all, it seems to only affect *some* users and those who are affected rarely stay by for long enough to provide necessary information like their OS, ISP, if they are using a VPN or not etc. I've sent a message to all members on my Discord server to alert everyone about this issue and that they can send me this kind of information if they are one of these affected with issues accessing the URL. More information soon!

And again, I'm not smart enough to know why this is happening to begin with. I can only make semi-educated guesses. If anyone knows why this is happening, it should be the HFS developers and gurus here on the Forums.

Bug reports / HFS File Server - Some users can't connect
« on: September 26, 2020, 11:13:29 AM »
Hi! I've been using HFS file server to host my Minecraft modpack for a few months now. It's been working great, with one massive exception. Some users can't access the download URL at all, either through their browser or through the Technic Launcher download client. Since the server is my own private one, located inside my office and connected to my home network, I thought there could be an issue with my Windows firewall or my router settings. So I checked both, opened the port 80 on both my router and firewall, both incoming and outcoming traffic- to no success. I then tried changing the port from 80 to something else, in my case 8080. So I opened the port 8080 inside my router settings and also in my firewall. I tested it from a different network and it worked great. I then asked another user from the US (I'm in Sweden) to download the file and they couldn't. Why is this? Is the US blocking traffic coming from Sweden? Or am I doing something wrong, perhaps? Again, it works perfectly for most peopel- but not everyone. When I hosted my modpack on an Aruba Cloud VPS I never had these kinds of issues.

Edit: To be more specific, this is the URL that sometimes can't be accessed from other networks: http://213.65.86.250:8080/yp3.3.0.zip

Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
Henrik

it's probably not related to HFS. Your dns/domain or your ip may be unreachable for censorship or similar.
You can verify that by trying something that's not hfs.

Hi! Sorry for the slow response.

I've done further analysis and it appears that this is an issue with the Technic Launcher platform, which I use to distribute the files to my users. Entering the IP and DNS manually into a browser (i.e. Google Chrome) and it works like intended for all users that have tried it. I will be getting in contact with Technic shortly. Thanks for your help!

Cheers!

Hi! I've been getting more than a dozen reports of users not being able to download files from my public Windows 10 HFS server which I'm hosting from my own Wifi network. For the vast majority of users, it works fine, but it seems that for about ~5% of users the URL doesn't lead anywhere (presumably blocked). I've of course port forwarded my router, both on the default port 80 and also on a custom port 8080- none of them yield any different results. My guess is HFS is blocked by these users ISP, which would be very unfortunate. Is there any work around? I'm out of ideas, any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers!
~Henriko
