Suggestion about save options

Hi !

I open this topic to make a suggestion to rejetto, and perhaps collect different point of view.

It would not be better than the configuration of HFS whether saved by default in .ini file?
I realize that we often advised users to save options in a file.

I also note a few posts on the forum, indicating the suspicious disappearances/persistence of settings after crash, reboot, and other mysteries (this happened to me as well, there has long... never with options saved to file -hazard ?-).
Often options saved in the registry me more embarrassed than anything else during various tests with HFS.

So my proposal:
- Enable by default: Save options ... to file
  (Saving ini.bak also actived)

Or, as alternative solution (which I like less) ... continue to save the options in the registry by default, but at every saving, save a ini.bak file too.

i would rather do it, if it had only pros, but
- saving to file is currently not safe (saving to registry is safe instead, AFAIK)
- saving to file in the same folder as hfs is bad practice since Vista

This is the first time I have heard anyone say that "saving to file" is  not safe.  This is now coming from rejetto without any explanation as to why it is not safe.    Please explain yourself.

If there is a security issue by saving to file, I consider this to be a bad bug that has to be fixed.

Didn't you notice all the data loss reported in the last 2 years?
I personally never met such problem, and also tried in many ways to remotely workaround the problem.
But from time to time, someone loses a file, while i have no memory about a similar fact on registry stored data.
I wish i knew more about it.

As you know I have been running hfs (all versions and the various beta builds) for about 5 years now.  I have never experienced any kind of loss by saving to file and have never saved to the registry.

From what I can recall reading is from new users that have lost their vfs or their ini because they weren't saved even once before shutting hfs down. As nothing was saved they had to start over the next time they re-started hfs.   

Saving to file is doing the job it is supposed to do for me and I also backup the ini with a script.  I don't think saving to file is a cause of data loss.

When the problem happens, files are just filled with "zero" bytes. I got some of them via email.
It's like a problem of the file system, i guess when saving and crashing (or power failure) at the same time.
Some users experienced the problem several times, so i guess is caused by some recurring conditions like habits or environment.
I have truly no idea on what's going on with it, but at the moment i cannot consider it safe.

It would be simply more sensible to leave the choice to the user in one dialog box between the register and a file WHEN nobody both is found

when hfs start, if he find not the key rejetto in the registry or hfs.ini in his folder, then a dialog box appears to propose the choice.

Like maverick I have used HFS for several years, always the betas.
The only time's I recall having a ini or vfs loss is when I failed to save
or did something dumb. I use a separate directory to back up all critical
components. I've never saved to registry, and I don't want to.
There will always be those who have system problems, or just haven't
bothered to read and learn. A bit of common sense on the part of the user
is required, isn't it?

Otherwise you will be forced to make a version of HFS with very very large buttons.
