1. did this problem appear only lately?
if you think it's about a recent HFS update, you may try running an older beta of HFS to understand when it was introduced.
in case, report to me, so i can use this information.
2. the file list is as heavy as the search, if not more (since it does not filter, but lists all).
so the problems about search and list may be related.
here is what it says in the log

looking at HFS window it says "thinking" and stays like that forever until I kick connection
that line means indeed "harvesting in the whole virtual file system".
this will bang your disk for the whole time it takes, unless you have networked resources listed, for which it takes long without local disk activity.
3. i had a quick look at RAWR template, and (to me at least) by default it searches through the whole file system.
doesn't matter if i'm in a specific folder.
