Ok, thank you.  So if I understand you correctly, if you want to apply a different template to a virtual folder, you would use "diff.tpl" and for a real folder you would use "hsf.diff.tpl"  So far, I have only used real folders.

NO.
there's a little confusion due to the fact we say "tpl" as short for "template".
he wrote "diff tpl" meaning "diff template", while "hfs.diff.tpl" is the only file name available.

both real and virtual folder let you specify the diff tpl inside the properties.
again, both let you type there a filename (full path) that contains the diff tpl. Like C:\myfile.txt
while real folder have one more way: you can just put a file named "hfs.diff.tpl" inside the folder.
3 ways total.

I load in [special:begin] a lot of files containing macros without any problem (I also name them mac_xxx.tpl).

The cuestion is only, as special begin is read normaly before the document-header , this files should not do any output in html. Files that produce som html-output should be loaded in the body section!
your computer has no brain - use your own !

yes, in [special:begin], we can put even macro as those whom have can use in events, but not something which corresponds to a web page.
