HFS ~ HTTP File Server / Re: a new beginning...
« on: December 31, 2021, 04:57:05 PM »
in the meantime i renamed the exe zip into exe-x64 so to let people know that is architecture dependent.
I also reuploaded so it to include the "ia32" module.
I think anyway that it's better if I switch to a machine-independent version of the crc32 module. It is used only while creating ZIPs, and I think there will be only an acceptable increase in CPU usage. I can always reconsider this choice in the future.

this should solve your crc32 problem:
enter hfs folder and run:
npm install @node-rs/crc32-win32-ia32-msvc --force

Can you tell me what CPU are you running it on? Or is it a VM ?

i think i know what's going on here.
That crc32 module is a library using machine-dependent code for optimal performance, and i'm including only the version for my machine (crc32-win32-x64-msvc)
while yours is different (crc32-win32-ia32-msvc).
It tries to load the other version and doesn't find it.
It should run smoothly on an x64 machine instead.
I'll have to see how to solve this "distribution" problem.

i just added an for those who don't want to install node

The exe is actually packing both "node" and "hfs" in a single file, and that's why it's big.

I did something wrong
"tsc" could not be found

I'm sorry i didn't answer before, i was relying on email notifications while they are apparently not working, maybe since i had to switch webhosting.
Consider you don't need to "build" because you get releases that are already built.
WHen you run it with "node ." you get EPERM on accounts.yaml, and that's a bit strange. Maybe you had it open with a software locking it. Double check the file status.
And also check new release

I'm very excited, this project is going very well.
I already got ZIP files without overhead on the server, just like we had with TARs.
At the moment it doesn't support resume of ZIPs, but that's ok for the moment. It took me a lot of work to get it working correctly like it is.

if someone is so bold to start playing with it

I'm already using this on my NAS.

Hi guys, and sorry if I've been quite a ghost. :)

For those of you who care, I'm trying to reboot the project.
You'll find it at
This is actually replacing a previous attempt that was at the same address.

I have no idea if I'll be actually able to bring it to the dignity it deserves, and that's a thought that has often stopped me from starting.
I decided to give it a shot, and we'll see.

The current state of the project is "very early stage" and it's probably not good enough for most of you.
It is probably good enough to replace it in my daily use: you get the VFS and basic accounts.

There's no "simple exe" distribution yet, so for most of you it may be hard to even start it as it is now.
I will take care of this kind of things later in the project.

Many of you already know that I don't like working on the old HFS (delphi) since long. Starting anew is the only way to enjoy it.

I'm sorry I'm late to say happy birthday NaitLee :)

to me it's not important if big companies play a big role in progress, as far as the progress is open and people are free to use and reproduce the technology on their own.
The web is evolving fast because the scope of possibilities is expanding too. I often prefer using a web app instead of installing a native one.
The era of closed technologies for the web (activeX, flash) is over.

hi Eddie,
about your streaming problem, I can say that HFS will "suggest" the browser to DOWNLOAD a file instead of opening unless you have specified you want otherwise inside Menu > Other options > Open directly in browser

If you want more than just the video maybe this suggestion above is not useful/necessary, as with the method i'm going to picture below.
If you want to  show movies providing other features on th screen your best way to go is probably to modify the template like this:
- find the [file] section
- add a new section [file.mp4|file.avi]
(i'm not sure about the syntax, you should check)
- in this section instead of linking the file directly you should link to "/player?video=FULL_FILE_PATH"
There is more than one way of doing this, but let's make an example:
- you create a folder /player
- hide it, as you don't want it to be listed, you will just link it directly
- inside the folder you put your index.html with the interface you want to offer
- here comes the hard part: you have to make the html, so you need to know how to do that.
- in the html you make frames, one for the video, and another for chat and extras
- the video frame will have to point to the parameter passed in ?video=PATH  . You will need javascript for that. Here a snippet that will get you the path if you enter getUrlParam('video')

function getUrlParam(k) {
    return new URL(window.location.href).searchParams.get(k)

If you want a similar alternative to this method is that instead of a folder with index.html in it you embed the page INSIDE hfs template as a section [player], and the link should similarly be  /~player?video=PATH
In this case you don't need javascript as HFS can give you the PATH with this syntax {.?video.}   if i'm not wrong. So your html will be something like
<video controls> <source src="{.?video.}"> </video>

Doing this job without constant access to the internet to google for information will be a hard challenage. Good luck!

In another <frame> you may link/embed another software for the chat, one that offers a web interface, so that you can embed it in the same page.

HTML & templates / Re: Need a movie/music template with mobile support

although i have access through HFS to my NAS, also to music files, i mostly play it using , the free version.
It works like a charm, the experience is close to a native app.

Hey rejetto,  ;D
if you want to stay in Italy, I have a really interesting Article about Neaples for you.
I have been there two years ago and it was amazing!

ahah, thanks. I've been in Naples only a couple of days but I'm only 2 hours away and I will surely return.
This is not a good time for traveling in general anyway but I've also Germany in my soon-to-visit list. I've relatives in Koblenz and friends in Berlin.
I'm sorry I'm mostly not available lately guys. I'm in a tough phase with my job.
