PHnote Actually, I think you have to do that to get a username/password ... can't remember??

Sources of information

If you are in search of information about writing in a wiki, [Help] is the best we've found, so far.

Many find this [Formatting] a very useful information source for more layout details.

Sandbox

The above sources suggest that "If you want to try out things without danger of doing any harm, you can do so in the Meta:Sandbox".

However, we'd far rather you used your personal sandbox. You can find this under "Personal tools" in the tool bar on the right of the screen. It matches your wiki username.

Editing policy

We'd also like to remind you that, under the terms of the Project Copyright Licence, "If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly and redistributed at will, then don't submit it here."

Markers

Throughout this wiki you'll see mysterious PHnote markers. These simply indicate to a contributor, whose initials happen to be PH, that something here needs to be fixed. You're welcome to adopt the same technique, but please use your own initials so that we can contact you in case of difficulty.

Big PHnote

Some users get confused about the use of folder restrictions, and the "username/password" facilities, in HFS.

It is, in fact, perfectly possible to have a highly secure HFS server without using the "username/password" facilities at all.

The best practice is to just protect your HFS folders (and perhaps files). This a key difference between HFS and conventional file servers. Many have used conventional servers and discovered that you have to login before you can do anything. HFS just isn't like that.

On this site for example, "rojetto" (whoever he is) has no account. But he can access the folders "Uploads and "rojetto". He can't access "Downloads" (he doesn't know the password).

You can also password-protect root.

Equally, however, for extra security you can set-up user accounts.

Menus

Wrong way to do menus

Set Upload → upload for accounts → anyone

Write! way (matches software, uses italic font, and no spaces)

Set Upload→Upload for accounts→Anyone

Graphic handling

We haven't yet worked out the best way to handle screen dumps and other pictures. These are just experiments right now.

Tables

These are great for attaching text to images, but not yet understood. This provides basic information: [[1]]

A B
C D

But what PHnote wants is all the first column cells merged (and containg an image), with say 6 cells in the second row. See save Options

cell codes go here
cells in the next row go here
