I would like a user to register before he or she can login. How is this possible?

it is possibly but at the moment the default template, and most template around, don't offer this feature, since it's quite new.
i think i once saw a customization offering it. Try searching the forum.

i would use the "search" feature of the forum, or even google.
possible involved boards are the main one (HFS) and "templates". Hardly "programmers corner"
