Could it be the server time is way off? 8 hours!

i guess time it is shown caring not your GMT offset

Had it on Auto detect.

In my Profile settings it says, the current forum time is 11:50 AM. Here in Germany it is 06:50 PM. That is 7 hours different. Where is the server located? Somewhere in USA?

yes, USA or Canada, don't remember.
i missed the "Time Offset" feature in "Look and Layout Preferences" in profile... till now :)
