Post by: selkov on November 13, 2007, 09:03:08 PM
I have HSF up and running.

To access my share i need to pu in my DNS...1.1.dns:[port#here]

But I would really like to do away with the port #.

Is this possible.

My lan is running 8 cpus, and thet are static ip within the lan.

HFS is running @ 192.168.2.1.

i don't know if i can help you whit this, but ...

when using  a router with ip static address like 192.168.1.1  and his dhcp server active, then you can talk all your computer with same mask lan 192.168.1.x/255.255.255.0, by their name    http://namecomputerhfs:port/...

(as soon as when you use \\namecomputerhfs\lanfolder)

you are not more explicit about your problem .....

I dont know how dns domains work specifically, but if im correct, you can configure a port somewhere in the settings of the DNS server.

Another possibility is to change the port to port 80 which does not need to be specified in the URL.

Saddly port 80 is not an option.

Any other way to do this?

as GE said, some dns offers URL redirection.
URL redirection can hide the port.
i know no other solution.

how can port redirection hide the port?

interested in technical details?
here it goes
a solution may be a web server replying with code 302 (moved) and an url with your current IP:port.
another solution is a web server replying with an html with a full-screen frame showing your hfs (this way the real URL is always cloacked).

Why cant you use port 80?

Foggy: It's sometimes disallowed by the ISP (or at least capped with bandwidth usage), and also if your running an IIS server port 80 is not an option.

Running Tomcat does it too.  There are quite a few things that do but for a normal user it should be open.

Selkov: What are you using your HFS server and what environment are you in? (Business, Personal, etc)

I am using HFS to support a gaming clan, forum pictures, scripts, movies, and other files.

My two concerns are :
1] If I have a link to a direct download it shows my address and port. I do not want the person to be able to "Back" the port # of it and access teh HFS directory to see the other files.

Perhaps there is a way so that the dl dialog box will not show the dl addeess?

2] Well after better thought I guess its just the one issue...lol.
When a forum member activates a download I just dont want them to have  way BACK into my drive.

ps. Port 80 is blocked.

if you dont want other people to be able to see the contents of the folders you can right click on the folder and deselect browsable.

Foggy,

Does that mean if the dl box reports as : me.mein.dyns.com:5900
that the person downloading the file cannot utilize me.mein.dyns.com ?

I have just played around a bit with this option.
It does solve one problem but opens another.

My users can not browse the shares any longer this is good.

But niether can I....How can I still access the index of all shares while NOT allowing the casual user to do the same?

hmm...
i guess then you are using a real folder.
1. add that folder another time (always real folder).
2. if the folder is named "stuff", then call the second "stuff2".
3. hide this stuff2
4. you browse stuff2, and when you have to give the url to someone, you remove the "2" from the url, so they don't know about stuff2

if you want to be more secure, restrict access to stuff2 with a password.
so, even if you forget to remove the "2" it's not a problem.

Rejetto does ignore limits in user options ignore if a folder is browseable or not?

WHAT ESSENTAILLY IS THE BENEFIT OF USING VIRTUAL FOLDERS?

example: you cannot virtually rename a file inside a real folder
