Title: Virtual versus Real Folders
Post by: jimby on March 05, 2009, 07:58:33 PM
HFS is great and is exactly what I've been looking for for ages. I've given up trying to use IM apps to share pics/vids with family abroad. This is does the job and is super easy, but I one question...

I've searched the forum and can't find an explination of the difference bewteen virtual and real folders, or to be more precise, when should I use one over the other.

Obviously I know that real foders exist and therefore can be used to upload etc, and that virtual folders are links, I guess, but why for instance are they slower as the app suggested when creating one.

hi jimby, and welcome

Fysack is the only one really deserving the "insane poster". :D

additionally:
the virtual folder is very near to what you see in CD burning software.
the real folder is very near to what you see in FTP servers.

ok, i updated the wiki.

Read the Wiki, had the same question!  Explicitly, when do you recommend a real folder, and when do you recommend a virtual folder?  If you follow the First time set up, "upload" MUST be a real folder.  Continue reading and download CAN BE virtual OR real.  The technical esplanation with Nero is handy, I still don't understand how to implement the nuances.
Thanks :)

I use Real folders only, its just easier that way. Virtual is only really handy if you want to make a group of folders, without changing the folder layout on your system.

point is: they both have pros and cons.
In my opinion it's easier for people to always use real ones, and eventually switch to virtual ones if they lack a feature with the former.

to answer your question: real ones are always updated and allow uploads, but don't allow you to work on contained items.
virtual ones are just like in nero.

And if you are hardcore undercover spy dude (007), hunted by all governments, except from your own, offcourse its the best to keep things virtual. Like a USB(D)j
If that is not true,, can we make it that way?  ::) :-\ ;D
