could you please be a bit more specific.
Do you have a router and did portforwarding?
Didn't you give your local instead your external IP?

Mate i am the original novice. I am on 512 dsl broadband connecting via a  Netcom NB5 adsl2 modem router, running Zone alarm security Suite as my firewall and antivirus and anti spyware. I feel my prob is port forwarding which I would have to organise I guess in Zone Alarm but not quite sure How. I right clicked on folder that contains files that i wish to share with friends. I then pasted the url generated by HFS in a message window which my friend pasted to his browser. Page cannot be displayed, but if I do same I can get the page. Also did self test and yes it says that it appears you are behind a router. So where do I go from here please

It appears that your problem is portforwarding.
Because your a novice, i assume your HFS is listening on port 80 (http default) on your computer: check in your browser 127.0.0.1:80 , you should get your HFS page.
Find out your LAN ip address, which is assigned to your pc by your router:
either find it in your router menu or enter in the DOS window "ipconfig /all". The "ip adres" probably starts with 10.0.0.x or 192.168.0.x , enter this ip in your browser and your hfs page should appear.
Enter the ip found in ipconfig /all at standardgateway in your browser: this will open the router config menu. Search for the the external internet address. This should be the ip you have given to your friend!
Search for the options NAT or NAPT or portforwarding and forward port 80.
Don't know how to do for your specific router, so read the manual or use the search. BTW There are many topics about this problem in this forum, search.
Ofcourse your fire wall should not block traffic on port 80 or block hfs, pls check or switch of temporarily.
Have fun.

:D  Thank you so much, I have noted what you have said and also done some further research on this and now going to follow it through and get it to work. Should be fun and a learning experience, I am a fairly determined person and dont give up easily.

no... if HFS can't open the port has to do with your computer, not with the router. port forwarding has to do with the router.

so, the port forwarding is not set, or set on another port.
don't bother your friends... use the self test to know if your HFS is visible from the internet.

rejetto thankyou for your reply. Did the self test and it comes up successful. So now if my friends use the url generated when I right click a folder and add to HFS then they should be able to open the page and download, YES?

With respect, if you dont use antivirus and spyware WOW, how are you sure you are clean??????????  Dont believe this is my problem as the self test works, now it is question of what my friends need to enter in their browser to be able to access.
