Most of the problems I mentioned only happen after running HFS and other programs without rebooting for several days. I just rebooted yestarday and everything is fine.

The save-on-shutdown feature does seem to be unreliable whether or not I have rebooted recently.

I will run the process explorer program you suggested next time I have slowdown problems with HFS and see if I can help pinpoint the problem.

Well rebooting my computer the slowdown/hang issue goes away as expected. I only brought that issue up because I only experience the slowdown if I have ran HFS several days(maybe a week) without rebooting and then I open up the HFS window I consistently get the slowdown.

As for the "saving my virtual file system on exit", this still doesn't seem to work. Sometimes the options save but not the Virtual File system itself. Not exactly sure what conditions affect it.

This could have something to do with my setup as I run similar programs on all of my computers. But all are decently fast 2+ghz 512+ram XPsp2...

But if no one else has this problem then it must be me... hehe

They aren't major so its no biggie either...

Slowdown when browsing HFS?

I don't know why but when I open up HFS 2.1 beta 14, it tends to hang for about 5 seconds every 5 seconds. It runs fine in the background but if I have it open on the desktop and bring my mouse over anything, it starts the 5 second hang cycle.

It always comes out of the hang but its annoying. The hang also slows down my computer and affects other windows... It doesn't always hang much if I have just rebooted my computer but if I leave it on a couple days, its definately goes through the hang cycle...


I was also wondering if this is a bug but when I shut down my computer, HFS doesn't save the Virtual file system and new options I've selected. I have HFS set to save on exit. It only saves if I manually exit the program or press save while in HFS.


Finally, HFS tends to leave top part of the HFS window on my screen after it minimizes (the blue bar in XP). Not sure if that is HFS or just my computer. It happens on all 4 computers that I have used HFS on... Its not that annoying because if I move another window over it it goes away.


Still great program and keep up the great work!

As far as I understand, this can't be done without php or CGI script.

A method that might not be too hard to do would be to have someone write a HTML template that looks for a comment.txt file which you can download and edit and upload back onto HFS. Using a HTML template, HFS can read that txt file and display it as a shoutbox.

Thatz how comments on files currently work as for as I know.

Gotta find someone to write the HTML template for you though.

I think the key here is "but today I was on another network" which to me means that you aren't in the same network. The 192.168.1.1 IP is for internal use only. That is not your external IP that can be accessed from the internet.

You need a program like Hamachi or a website like www.dyndns.org (supported by HFS) to access HFS from another network.

Please look at the Howto wikis.

HFS ~ HTTP File Server / HFS and wiki / forums

Sorry for the newbie question...

I know most wiki and forums both require php (which won't be supported by HFS in the near future), but how much work for me would it be to host a wiki or forum? Are there non-php based forums/wikis?

If I wanted to host a wiki or forum on my computer (which is already running HFS), would it cause problems? Or can I use HFS to host the HTML pages and install some PHP program to run the php script for forum/wiki? Would having HFS making running a wiki/forum easier?

Or do I need to install a separate set of tools like Wamp and to run the whole thing? From what I have researched, the Apache / Wamp tools are super complicated and command-line oriented (very unuser friendly)...

I'm going through http://www.wikimatrix.org to see what wikis are out there but its taking a long time. Does someone just know of something that works? And maybe if someone knows of a forum program that runs on HFS? Or am I just wasting my time?

Just a simple suggestion. I use HFS as a way to send people files over IM or email and it would save me a couple clicks if the "add to HFS" option included a "copy external link to file". (yes, I'm lazy but I do this a lot with my forgetful coworkers who lose files all the time).

That would save me 2 steps in the 4 step process of 1. adding file to HFS, 2. open HFS to find external link 3. copy external link 4.paste external link into IM or email...

Also, I'm not sure how this would work but it'd be great if we could somehow integrate this into Hamachi (www.hamachi.cc) and have HFS reconize the 5.xxx.xxx.xxx Hamachi address as the external address instead of your real IP. This would allow HFS to send/recieve files without needing to forward ports etc... This could also be a second option in "add file to HFS and copy Hamachi link" when you right-click on your files in your computer.

I'll probably suggest to Hamachi that they implement some type of VFS like HFS too. Right now I just set up Hamachi and HFS on my computers so I can quickly easily copy and transfer files between computers. The VFS system works so well to organize what you want to share compared to the slow and annoying windows XP sharing options.

One more thing. I don't know why, but HFS sends files MUCH faster than using ICQ, MSN, Yahoo or any other instant messenger "send file" function (both on the Hamachi network and as a regular webserver). Another reason I love HFS.

Wow is it that easy? I was looking at that and couldn't figure out if the "startup" folder was just a link folder of if it did something.

If its that easy, having a feature in HFS or not doesn't make a big difference then. But one of those little things that should help make HFS an even more user friendly and awesome software.

I just use Windows XP and was wondering if there is a way to get HFS to automatically start after rebooting a computer?

I realize I can do this by setting up HFS as a service but that seems very troublesome to do. Regular programs often just have an checkbox option to automatically start on reboot. Is there a reason HFS can't do this or am I just missing something here?
