Title: HELP! I can locally browse my server, but my friends cannot.
Post by: digested_cat89 on December 14, 2005, 08:21:16 PM
I am new to this program. I read through the FAQ to find the answer to this. I tried the first 2 options. I think it is the router or proxy thing. How do I fix it. Thanks.  :?

I think it's your router.
Tell us your router model/name and we will try to help you. :smokin:
Title: Whats the router?
Post by: digested_cat89 on December 14, 2005, 08:36:00 PM
Is the router you are refering to the thing that gives me the internet? Cause I have a Belkin router, it sends wireless signal up from my other PC to my PC I use HFS on.

By the way thanks for the quick reply  :)

Try follow this guide here:
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Belkin/F5D7630/HTTP.htm

Port 80 may not work because it may be blocked by your ISP so try a higher port.

There are always router questions on how to port forward.

I suggest you make a STICKY and include this EXCELLENT site below that shows you how to do it, step by step,  for a large variety of routers.

Sorry I forgot to type that username but that Guest was me who posted that link. Maybey I should register.

Yes a sticky would be good. Remeber to try that website when ever you are running a server and have problems.

I always used that site to help other users.
Making it sticky would be very helpful.
Edit: I made another post about it and I hope rejetto will make it sticky.
Title: I can set my IP to static!!!
Post by: digested_cat89 on December 15, 2005, 05:37:02 PM
Hi,

Thanks for the reply, I went to the website you told me to configure my router, but first it saied I have to go and make my ip address static. I type into run 'command and this came up:

(http://picshosted.com/c/1490/screenshot.th2.jpg) (http://picshosted.com/v/1490/screenshot.bmp)

How do I overcome this, cause I tried to forward my port without doing this first but it didn't work, so I thought I had to set my ip adress static, please tell me how to.

Thanks  :D

Sorry, I am new to this forum and dont know how to put sticky.  :?:

I know how to overcome that problem:
Just open CMD and not COMMAND. (Start -> Run -> CMD)
Anyway, I posted another topic about the routers: http://www.rejetto.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2622
Only rejetto and Mr. Anon can make topics sticky.

I would suggest you use port 8080 on both HFS and your router virtual machine settings.

hi  digest,

the link to your site specifies your internal lan address  . it needs to specify
your external IP address.

HFS can find you this, goto to menu, then select IP address, then select FIND EXTERNAL ADDRESS.

send me a new link and i could try it

Go to 'Menu-Ip address-Find external address' like in the pick here

Then it will show here and you give your friends this address that you get here with the port included.

That's probably your maximum upload bandwidth or your friend's maximum download bandwidth.
Title: HELP! I can locally browse my server, but my friends cannot.
Post by: SiY11 on December 22, 2005, 03:32:05 AM
Because your friend is probably on a 3mbps connection that’s 3megabits a sec and to get that to kilobytes you would use this formula now because there is 1024 kilobytes in a megabyte we do 1024 * 3 = 3072 now kilobits are different from kilobytes so we take 3072 / 8 because there is 8bits in a byte and you get 345kilobytes a sec download now for his up load its probably 256kbps so we will do 256 / 8 because we want to convert kilobits to kilobytes so it will = 32 now assuming you have the same connection as your friend you will upload to him at a max of 32kilobytes. On the LAN side with most wireless routers you will get 54mbps that 'megabits per sec' not 'megabytes per sec' so in order to find the speed of 54megsbits to convert to kilobytes we will do this 1024 * 54 = 55296 / 8 = 6912 so your wireless router can reach speeds of 6912kilobytes a sec to see how that is in megabytes we do 6912 / 1024 = 6.75megabytes a sec I hope you were able to understand this it can get confusing sometimes.

Actually your calculation is wrong for megabits.

b = bits
B = Bytes

You are using a factor of 1024 in your conversions which is for Bytes not bits. 1 megabit = 1000 bits.  Therefore, for example,  a 3 megabit connection would give you a download speed of  3 * 1000 / 8 = 375 kB/s (less  any overhead).

Your reference to upload bandwidth of 256 kb/s should be 256 kB/s.  Your calculation for this ended up correct (less any overhead).

Post by: SiY11 on December 22, 2005, 05:26:30 AM
Nope I was right there are exactly 1024 kilobytes in a megabyte

Code: [Select]
1,024 Byte = 1 Kilobyte (KB)
1,024 Kilobyte (KB) = 1 Megabyte (MB)
1,073,741,824 Bytes = 1 Gigabyte (GB)
1 Gigabyte (GB) = 1,024 Megabyte (MB)

You can check on a calculator using this table.

Lol I am confused how I am wrong there are 8 bits in a byte so you divide the bits by 8 to get kilobytes.
Title: HELP! I can locally browse my server, but my friends cannot.
Post by: SiY11 on December 22, 2005, 05:36:44 AM
1 megabit = 1 048 576 bits

3 megabits
bits 3145728
bytes 393216
kilobits 3072 <-- Divide that by 3 and you get 1024kilobits
kilobytes 384
megabits 3
megabytes 0.375

First off, I made a typo a few posts up where I said 1 megabit = 1000 bits.  That should read 1 megabit - 1000 kbits.

"A megabit per second (Mbps or Mbit/s) is a unit of data transmission equal to 1,000 kilobits per second or 1,000,000 bits per second."

As I stated previously, the error is when you used 1024 and not 1000 before dividing by 8 to get kB/s (kilobytes per second).

We are talking about megabits in relation to data transfer rates in internet and network speeds.  Therefore, 1 megabit = 1,000,000 bits.

Your reference above, which is correct but not what we are talking about, is a megabit relating to storage or capacity like in memory modules and video games cartridges etc.  The megabit in that case is equal to 1,048,576 bits.

I know it can get confusing.

Ok dude I knew what you meant but 1 megabit = 1 024 kilobits I know what I am talking about I am in school for computer sci and one of the requirements is MATH! and everybody know that 1 megabit = 1 024 kilobits so that answer.com is incorrect and I am will to challenge the person who posted the incorrect answer I have an MCSE book that has many typos and incorrect term and key terms ok so don’t believe ever thing you see or hear get a second opinion. I think we might be talking about two different things because I don’t understand how we keep getting different results.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megabit

That only proves me right you don’t understand I converted bit to bytes because he was asking why he only got 30 kilobytes a sec. you know what we are both right
10^6 bit/s = 1,000,000 bit/s = 1 Mbit/s (one megabit or one million bits per second)
2^20 bit/s = 1,048,576 bit/s = 1 Mibit/s (one mebibit per second)
What I was doing was converting bits to bytes so that make the 1024 number correct.
I CONVERTED FROM BITS TO BYTES TO KILOBYTES

lets say you want to find out how many megabytes are in 54megabits you do this 54 / 8 = 6.75mb ok if you want to know how many kilobytes are in 54megabits you would do 1024 * 54 = 55296 / 8 = 6912kilobytes now to check our answer we will do 6912 / 1024 = 6.75 so that right there proves my calculations are correct because the first equation I did was bit not bytes. But on the second equation I converted bits to bytes then to kilobytes then I checked my answer and found it correct its simple algebra dude.

One very last post in this thread (which really doesn't seem to be going anywhere and I don't think anyone but us really cares anyway)

Yes, both of our calculations are correct.

BUT.. This thread is about data transfer rates (speed) on the internet or on a network.

In that context, it always equals 10^6. (1 megabit = 10^6 = 1,000,000 bits).  My calculations are based on that.

YOU are assuming (by your calculations) that 1 megabit = 2^20 = 1,048,576 bits (which is also correct) BUT that is used to express the capacity of memory modules NOT data transfer speed on the internet or a network which is what this thread is about.  I have explained that previously in this thread.

Therefore, my answer is correct. :smokin:

But the only way to convert to true Kilobytes is to use the 2^20 I believe that because when you download something the status indicator displays in Kilobytes a sec not bits so to be more accurate to the progress window you would use the 2^20 always but this is turning into a what’s better 10^6 or 2^20 that’s like doing the NVIDIA vs. ATI they have there pro's and con's but when it comes down to it depends on the person for the selection. Phew this was fun.  :rotfl:
