Is it possible to create an upload directory that has no password but make it non browsable so that ppl can upload but not SEE that folder or others in the tree?

Yes hide (or hide tree) this folder.
After, you put into the parent foldera new link to this folder as
http://%host%%folder%upload
or somewhere a new link with the full path as
http://%host%/parent1/parent2/.../upload
,
Otherwise you can create a virtual folder upload with a diff template that redirect to the real upload folder, this is the best solution.
