I gather that the file mask \* makes whatever files that are in that specific folder invisible.  I don't see the advantage of that versus protecting a folder with login credentials?

Thanks for the clarification. I followed the steps, set the permissions to a specific user and implemented the file mask filter as suggested. I ran into a problem though.

Even after I log in with the necessary user info, I still can't see or download any files. How can I set it up so that I can view the files online with my login credentials, while allow others to publicly download files off of HFS, provided I give them a direct link to the file that I want them to download?

If you don't want them to see files in Folder use a inverted file mask in Properties, File Masks
Files Filter \* or check no download in properties for them to be visable but secure.

I was with you until this point. Could you clarify what you mean by using an inverted file mask in Properties? Thanks!

HFS ~ HTTP File Server / Where are log files stored?
« on: January 18, 2009, 08:58:33 PM »
Hello,

Where are the HFS log files stored? My HFS is clearing the GUI log file daily. I would like to be able to access the logs for the last month. How can I set HFS to save the log files to a txt file for the month.

I know I can right-click on the log in HFS and save to file. Is there a way to set the program to store the log automatically?

Can %m%-%y%\%d%-%m%-%y%.txt be used for the monthly log?

Thanks!

-nka

HFS version: 2.3 beta (219)

*Update: right-clicking and selecting Log to file... allowed me to enter %m%-%y%\%d%-%m%-%y%.txt for the monthly log txt file. The HFS log was stored within a newly created folder in the HFS main folder.  With those parameters set, will HFS automatically start a new log in February, or do I have to set up a new log manually each month?

Please note: There are some ISPs that are cheating at speed test sites, that means, for speed tests you get full speed, but a lot less otherwise. I know that Comcast is doing it, but I don't know what's with Road Runner...

Over at Filezilla's forums I've to deal with the same problems regularly - people complaining about the software 'cause the ISPs are throttling speed.

That is an interesting point. Do you think that being on wireless would significantly effect the speed?

let us know if you make the ftp experiment

I ran the FTP experiment using Filezilla and got more or less the same download speed as when HFS is used. I was not able to get even 140 kilobits/s. It was more like maximum 110 kilobits/second. The computer that I was using to test the FTP server was on high speed DSL, so who knows what their speed was. It appears that HFS is Not the issue.

Maybe it is because the computer that I am using to host the HFS server is on wireless and not hard wired to the cable modem? Thoughts?

menu -> debug -> experimental high speed handling

is it enabled?

anyway, i asked my server (rejetto.com) to download a big file from you (being admin on the forum i can see your IP), and from your-ip/~progress i saw about 140KB/s.

i know sometimes HFS is not fast enough.
i don't know at the moment how to improve speed in such cases.
i don't even have such a fast internet connection to make tests.

'experimental high speed handling' is enabled. Thanks for trying.

Yes but it depends on alot of things... try setup a FTP-server and see what speed they get

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not sure how to set up an FTP-server, which is one of the reasons I use HFS. How can I do that?

Try filezilla ftp server: http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=server

Guide to setup: http://lifehacker.com/339887/build-a-home-ftp-server-with-filezilla
More guides at google: http://www.google.se/search?&q=setup+filezilla+server

Thanks. I will try that and see what the max download speed is.

hi.
yes, that test attests (!) your right to get 200KB/s.
what HFS version are you using?

2.3 beta build 218

menu>limits>speed limit maybe?

My guess:
Quote
I'm getting 100-150 kbps download speeds
is in KB/s instead of Kb/s
So: 150KB/s = 1200Kb/s
And if your upload speed is 1635Kb/s
Then 1200Kb/s isn't too bad...

Speed limit is disabled. According to my upload speed, people should be downloading off me at ~200Kilobits per second. 1634/8 = 204.

Hi, I'm getting 100-150 kbps download speeds when using the internet. My speed test results indicate that I should be getting faster speeds. Is there a router setting I should adjust or an HFS setting that I can tweak? Thanks!

My upload speed isn't slow, and yet I'm still getting slow download speeds while using the internet. Is there a router setting I should adjust? I'm paying for premium cable internet through RoadRunner and only get download speeds of 100-150 kbps. Thanks.

HFS ~ HTTP File Server / Re: HFS downloads capped at 185KB/s

Hi, I have posted the desired info. Any thoughts on why I'm getting capped @ 185kb/c when the speed test shows that my maximum DL speed is significantly higher?
Look at the test during the times more precise measurement units. There are kbps (kBit/s). In the final by kb/s. As you with your lying 185kB / s (1480kBit/s) even better than the test.

Hi, thanks for the reply, but I am afraid that I do not understand your response. Could you please clarift what you are saying here? Thanks!
