I think he's problem is that hw cancels te login when the password is asked he doesn't get the 401 error page.

I didn't know HFS has an error 401 page? I've just tested it with HFS 1.5g, made a password protected virtual directory and when I hit cancel in the login screen I get a blanc page with the following source:

[deny] is issued when you can't access the resource independently by your user/pass.

unchecking the "let browse files", the browsing is disabled and you can't browse, no matter what your password is.
