it depends on the software you use

a good download manager can do it
Opera can do it (CTRL+J)

Good tip! I am a Opera user for many years and didn't know that function. Works Great! Thanks. :D

hi!
maybe it is possible to write something in JS which would "popup" a "save as dialog" for every file in that folder so u would only have to click "save" on every file?

i have an idea.
a ZIP file for the folder should not be possible because i think it can't be done in streaming.
but TAR can!
what do you think about having a link that let you download a whole folder as a TAR file?
it should be supported by most archiver software, i think.
and maybe a GZ compression may come, as an option because it may CPU hog for the server

as mr. anon suggested me in chat, a ZIP in store mode (0 compression) maybe a better solution
-
I thought comressing before (& after ?) - is a good idea. Isn't it making the download faster ?
Any way I think it may require some user control - the tree level he wants the files from (including subdirectories or no) and how to unzip it (if possible - using or not using folder names)
-
wold be a VERY nice feature! :)

think of a number of people downloading from you, and a number of compressions, maybe hundreds of megabytes.
moreover, i saw ZIP format is rather complicate, i think i will try TAR for now
