Hello all, This is my first post.
Ive searched for awhile for a program like HFS. Thanks.
I have Charter Communications 10MB DSL Cable

I tested my server. It works.
I had my friend from all the way across the country(US) test my server by downloading
a file from my server. He has 8MB DSL Cable.

The file was 52MB. His download speed was around 150kbps, sometimes 200kbps.

Now here is the deal.
This is my reason for using HFS.
What I intend to do is....
I create and sell video tutorials on music production. The customer pays me via paypal.
I zip the video tutorial into a .zip file.
I will them email them a download link so they can download their video tutorial from my server.

The video tutorials could end up being 500MB to 700MB in size.

I have currently been selling a tutorial, and after payment,
I upload their .zip file(90MB) to my free "rapidshare" collectors account, and send them the link.
I can see when they have downloaded their file. Then I just delete the link/upload to kill the download link.
But I am limited to 100MB file sizes. I have to upload the files.
90MB takes around 25-30 minutes.
So, I was interested in running my own server.

ENTER HFS!!!!!

OK, SO HERE IS MY QUESTION

I am through Charter Communications.
#1
Is there a bandwidth limit? If there is, can I increase it somehow?
Lets say I sale 2 tutorials a day.
Each customer downloads a 500MB file.
1GB a day.
In 30 days that would be a total download from my server of about 30GB
Now, when new tutorials are put out, I get alot of orders from return customers.
So it alway varies.

#2
Is there a way to increase, somehow, the download speed for my customers?
Like I said, my friend downloaded at around 150kbps
50MB in about 5 minutes or so.
Yes, I know it its dictated also by my customers internet speed.
But like I said above. My friends is pretty fast.
He went to speedtest.net and got a download speed of
5276kb/s at a distance of around 1500 miles.
So Im guessing there may be some limitation set by my ISP?

You must check your upload speed, not download. If they are downloading from you your upload speed is used. It is in many cases much lower than your download speed. Enter the world of asymmetric connections.

So, what is your upload speed? If you're getting it it kb/s, you have to divide by 8 to get KB/s.

According to speedtest.net
Download speed 9904 kb/s
Upload speed 978 kb/s

Charter Communications 10MB Plan
10MB downloads
1MB uploads

I contacted charter, they told me its about my upload speed.
And for what Im trying to do, there would not really be any issues with bandwidth.
So I guess Im good.
Gonna run some more tests.

I will have my friend do some more downloading from my server.
See what his speeds are.

Hey MarkV, this is kind of off subject. But I noticed you have Midna as your avatar.
My daughter is 9 yrs old, and she beat Zelda The Twilight Princess(Wii). She has a total play time of around 76 hours.
She was using a guide also, for some parts. She hates cheating. And of course, I helped sometimes.

Anyway, Im upgrading my upload speed, if possible.
Is there an internet ISP that is recommended for fast upload speeds?
What ISP do companies use, that supply large files for customer to download from their server?
That allow fast download speeds for their customers? Or fast upload speeds for the company?
Thanks

Wouldn't it be easier to get a host server at an ISP? Cost may vary a lot but might be an alternative since home connections are not well suited for uploading large quantities of files which will eventually end in the ISP downgrading your "real" speed.

welcome Dozer!

it's sad, but i think HFS is not the best solution for you.
you should buy a web hosting solution.
pros:
Your customers will download eventually faster.
Your internet connection will have a breath.
The download will work even if you are offline.
You upload once, they download many.

You can find thousands services, and some may fit your needs. Here you will get unlimited space and decent speed for only €25/year. It's better if you find a similar service in your country anyway. Speed should be higher.
