Title: Help!!! Confused About True External IP Address!!
Post by: nusushika on November 26, 2013, 11:25:39 AM
Hi,

I'm new here and first I'd like to say thanks too the great program builder.

Well, my problem is:

I use a router which gives me an address 192.168.0.101 (My router is D-Link). I tested it in browser, it worked OK.

Then I found my external IP address 58.xx.xx.xx, but it didn't work.

I checked my router and found something weird. In the Status page, I saw:

Local address : 10.10.163.167
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.255
Peer address : 10.10.160.1

None of them is my external address!!!
And I don't have any idea about what Local address and Peer address mean.

It seems that my computer is behind a router and a bigger router which belongs to the ISP.
The ISP claims their service uses fiber cable.

But some years ago when I used ADSL, hfs worked fine without a glitch.

So please help.

go to this website:

http://www.ipchicken.com/

the address is you external ip address, it can also be found in your router....

according to the ip address you posted, it sounds like you are in some form of switch thats is using networking/nat protocols to give you an ip address, i would recommend using a web name and add it to your HFS, such as a dyndns.org host name, as the site will be forwarded to HFS using the dynaminc dns updater....

IF your still having problems, then it is either an internal network error on how you are conecting to the internet, or an ISP error on ports on the network where your connection is coming in.

OK, thanks bmartino1. But dyndns doesn't work either.

I think my ISP prevents me from using file-sharing software like hfs. Maybe the ISP's switch which you mentioned above, blocks the ports hfs might use by some specific methods. And the most important clue I found is that my emule always getting lowID (my utorrent works very well, though). So, I stop trying now...

Thank you anyway~~

it sounds like the ISP in there networking structure have a weird public ip sharing...

To help me better help you,
what type of dlink router is it,
ie is it a combo form your ISP,

also how is your hfs machine and what is connected to the dlink router
ie the isp modem to the internet cloud?

is you setup hfs machine > dlink router >modem >internet cloud (which is you ISP provdier...)
or is your setup hfs machine> dlink combo modem >internet cloud ....

I will need some more infomration form you to help you with your problem. If you have a dns acount, try adding that to your router as a dynamic dns host, not hfs and see if it can communicate via proxy ping or other...(not at home, try to ping you dns account host...

If not dyndns, try no-ip.org, or other free dns servers out there. i find it strange and understand the fiber infrastructure as i have worked as an ISP before... Strange though that your dlink would show a "peer address"... instead of a gateway...

also, to help me understand as there are different country rules and setting, are you located in the United states, or over seas (don't put you address or state, just the country/continent...)

The 10.1.10.x IP address is the ip of the router in your cable modem.  If you have a router which it sounds like you do then call your ISP and ask them to bridge the router in your modem.  Then you will see your external IP address at the wan port of YOUR router.  There is no advantage in double nat'ing using 2 routers.  You only need 1 router.  Those old SMC routers in their modems were not very versatile.  Your Dlink is much more capable of a router.

the 58.* is your external address, but consider
1) it doesn't necessarily work, you may be blocked
2) even if it works, it works from the outside of the network, it will never work from your computer
