I Cannot Connect To My HFS Server from another Computer...

To start with, I want to say thank you for those who designed HFS.  Wonderful Job!!!

My Computer:

MS Windows XP Professional SP2
AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+
2.0GB RAM,  NVIDIA Geforce 9500 GT OC Video Card
Internet Connect: 10 Mb Cable Connection
I am using a cable modem (not a router).

I have setup an HFS File Server on my PC.  My IP address is 97.80.169.177.  I have given my Firewall full rights to HFS (including Server Rights).  I have setup a File Folder on HFS called "Rejetto Test File (Not Password Protected)" with an MP3 called "Immortals - Mortal Kombat Theme.mp3" for test purposes.

The Problem:

When I enter my IP Address in IE and Firefox, I can access my HFS File Server (and I can download files from my HFS File Server from my own computer in which HFS is running from).  However, when I enter the same IP address into a friends computer on IE and/or Firefox, I cannot access my HFS File Server (Very Frustrating).  How can I access my HFS File Server from the outside world via another PC?  What steps must I take?

Also, I tried the Self Test Option.  The reply was" The test is Successful.  The Server should be working fine."

Perhaps your ISP does not allow to use port 80, then you should use another port.

My Internet Service Provider is: Charter Communications and my port is port 80.  What other ports can I use?

I just tried to access my HFS File Server from a friend that lives above me through IE.  The message I received was "Broken Link."  What can I do to resolve this?

I just turned off my Firewall and tried to access HFS File Server from my friends computer through IE and still got the "Oops - Broken Link" message (So Frustrating).  I'm lost at this point.  What other ports can I use other than Port 80.  Maybe that is my only option left...

As I wrote you before hours, you are online with port 80, i connect and download. Just type http://mm.nn.oo.pp on your friends pc.

Connected and downloaded test file ok.  No problems.

I used IP Address "97.80.169.177" on two different external PC's (One running Vista and the other Win XP) using Port 80.  How come I can not get to the HFS File Server? 


Note:  I can get to them locally and download files.  However, I can not get to them externally.  What could I be doing wrong on the external PC's?  What things should I be doing differently?

I know you may be getting frustrated with me and I appreciate all the help you are giving me.  However, please bear with me until I can find a resolution to this problem.

When logging into a my IP Address from an external Windows machine, I can't even see the HFS File Server Page.  My HFS Log File isn't even showing a log on attempt. 

Setting up HFS File Server is my first file server I have ever set up.  I am new to the whole subject.  I have followed the instructions from: http://rejetto.com/wiki/index.php/First_time_configuration .  However, I ran into this problem and went directly to the forums.  I have to go to work now (3rd shift).  I will try to log back in tomorrow morning.

To resolve this issue and as a note to the administrators, I'll tell you what the missing solution was to this problem.  This solution should be listed in the FAQ of the "HFS File Server" website.

When trying to connect to your HFS File Server, you must be running HFS.exe (HFS File Server) on the external machine that you are using to connect to your own HFS File Server.

I kept trying to Log In to my HFS File Server from a friends PC(s) and kept having errors like "page not found" and/or "Oops - Broken Link" and/or many other error messages.  Even though it would be nice to access the HFS File server without having to run HFS.exe on an external PC (but this is not possible).  HFS.exe (HFS File Server) must be running on both machines that you are using.  If I'm at a College and/or Library and/or Work and the PC has Deepfreeze installed on it and/or administrator rights denying the right to install and run HFS.exe (HFS File Server) on it, then I will be unable to access my HFS File Server. 

It would be nice if a portable version of HFS that could be run from a USB flash drive allowing you to access your HFS File server from an external machine could be created.  That way you could download and upload files directly to and from your hard drive eliminating the need for Larger USB Flash Drives.  This Portable Standalone Version of HFS File Server would have to run without installing, and be able to bypass Windows Vista UAC, and not leave any traces of your uploading/downloading on the machine that you were working on.  I tried running HFS File Server on a friends PC that had UAC running with a password block out for any programs that would be installed on the machine without my friends permission.  Windows Vista wouldn't let me run HFS File Server.  My Loss!

Anyways, I hope this solution helps anyone else that comes across this problem.  I also hope to see someone create a portable version of HFS File Server that can run just as smoothly on a security enabled PC as "Portable VLC Media Player" and/or "OpenOffice" can.  Even though these alternate programs are unrelated to HFS File Server, both of these alternate programs run smoothly on security enabled PC's.

HFS.exe (HFS File Server) must be running on both machines that you are using.

A simple browser is sufficient to access the files on the PC that run HFS.exe

How do you bypass security like Windows Vista UAC on a PC which you don't have Administrator Rights on?
